Sodium Bicarbonate is the primary ingredient in Alka Seltzer. It acts as an antacid, and helps neutralize some of the effects of acid reflux.
When citric acid (C6H8O7) reacts with the sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), the active ingredients in Alka Seltzer, the following reaction occurs:
The bubbles produced are CO2, and help give the product a soothing effect on the throat. When all of the CO2 bubbles are finished bubbling out, the sodium bicarbonate is thought to have fully dissolved into its cation (Na+) and anion (HCO3-).
