What is BSCA all about?
Brevard School Counselors’ Association (BSCA) is a group of counselors who
meet every other month to advocate for the role of the School Counselor, and
therefore our students, in Brevard County. We also meet with the our Superintendent and/or School Board members about twice a year to make sure we are part
of the conversation in meeting the social emotional needs of our students. We are
an action oriented group, always searching for ways to improve/define our
roles and advocate at a school and district level.
In recent years, we have seen significant positive changes made within our
district regarding the use of School Counselors through our advocacy. We have introduced ASCA guidelines and recommendations to our Superintendent and union officials, while collaborating to find new ways to meet the social emotional needs of
all students in Brevard County. In doing so, members from some schools have shared
recent gains such as no longer being assigned morning, lunch, and dismissal duties, having ESOL responsibilities re-assigned to the Literacy Coaches, and implementing school-wide morning meetings with evidence based SEL curriculums. Undoubtedly, the commitment to advocating for students is evident in the work of BSCA, while Brevard County School Counselors strive to remove barriers to academic, social emotional, and career success for ALL students.
