Simple Lace Shawl

Materials:

600 yds very soft sport weight yarn

 

US #8 circular needles, 40” long

 

Cast on 7 stitches very loosely. Place a marker on either side of the center stitch.

 

Row 1: Holding yarn in front, slip the first stitch as if to purl (henceforth referred to as Sl 1st  st), knit into the front and back of the second stitch, YO, K1, YO(move marker), K1(move 2 marker), YO, k1, YO, knit into the front and back of next st, K1 (13 stitches)

 

Row 2: Sl 1st st,, knit across row.

 

Row 3: Sl 1st st, k into the front and back of next stitch, YO, k4, YO(before marker), K1(move 2nd marker), YO, k to 2 stitches before end of row, YO, k into the front and back of next stitch, k1. (19 stitches, 9+1+9)

 

Row 4: Sl 1st st, knit across row.

 

Row 5: Sl 1st st, k into the front and back of next stitch, YO, knit to marker, YO (before marker), K1(move next marker), YO, knit to 2 stitches before end of row, knit into front and back of next stitch, k1. (25 stitches: 12+1+12)

 

Row 6:  Sl 1st st, knit across row.

 

Repeat rows 5 and 6 until there are 43 stitches: 21+1+21

 

 

Lace Pattern:

 

Row 1: Sl 1st st, knit into the front and back of next stitch, YO, k1, *YO, k2tog*. Repeat from * to * across row until 3 stitches remain, K1, YO, K into the front and back of next stitch, K1 (49 stitches: 24+1+24)

 

Row 2, 4, 6, 8:  Sl 1st st, knit across row.

 

Row 3, 5, 7: Sl 1st st, K into front and back of next stitch, YO, K to marker, YO (before moving marker), K1 (move second marker), YO, K until 2 stitches remain, YO, K into front and back of next stitch, K1.

 

Continue lace pattern for as long as desired, until at least 300 stitches are on the needle.  Bind off very loosely.

 

Optional crocheted edging: This may be done in the same yarn or a coordinating yarn. 

Starting at one side of long top edge, do a SC in one of the lace holes at edge of shawl, skip next lace hole, and do 5 DC in the next lace hole.  Continue in this fashion, skipping a lace hole between each single crochet and each set of 5 double crochets.  To turn corners, do 5 DC, chain 1, 5DC, before proceeding as usual with 1 SC, skip hole, 5 DC.

 

To finish work in all loose threads.  Wet finish and block if desired.
