These are links to open source software that I use the most often at work, at play and at home with my kids to help them learn.  Some of these you might recognize, and some you might not.  Let me know if you find anything useful, know of better alternatives, or find any broken links!  My contact details can be found on the left side of the page.

Software - Dev Tools Scratch Scratch is a programming environment designed to help young people learn important mathematical and computational ideas, while also learning to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively. 
Software - Entertainment/Games Apple Game Server Connect your retro apple computer to your PC and use this program to play hundreds of classic games without a floppy drive! 
Software - Entertainment/Games GCompris Educational software suite consisting of several games for ages 2-10 -- Completely open-source for Linux, mostly free for Windows. 
Software - Entertainment/Games Java Apple Computer Emulator Java Apple Computer Emulator -- Emulates an Apple //e with 65c02 processor and 128kb ram 
Software - Entertainment/Games Virtual Apple Virtual Apple is a collection of retro Apple software you can use right from your browser! 
Software - General Open-source office suite including a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, and database tools. High compatibiliy with MS Office, and a good alternative when you don't have access to MS Office. 
Software - General Ubuntu Ubuntu is a community developed, Linux-based operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. Note: I have been using Ubuntu daily for two years and it just keeps getting better! 
Software - General VirtualBox VirtualBox is a powerful x86 and AMD64/Intel64 virtualization product for enterprise as well as home use. Note: Like VMWare only open-source -- SOLID! 
Software - Graphics/Video Gimp GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. 
Software - Sound/Music Aldrin Aldrin is an open source modular music sequencer/tracker for the GNU/Linux operating system. It features a flexible audio routing system commonly found in expensive audio software, enabling you to mix, split, mutilate and modify audio signals emitted by software synthesizers and samples. 
Software - Sound/Music Audacity Audacity® is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. It is available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems. Note: This program does multi-track editing. 
Software - Sound/Music Buzé Buzé is an open source modular audio sequencer and tracker for Windows. Designed as a modern remake of Jeskola Buzz.  
Software - Sound/Music JJack Jack audio driver for Java Sound (this can fix broken java-based sound apps in Ubuntu!)
