Listening class:

1. What do we listen to?
e.g.1
situation; breakfast with the family
aim: confirming the schedule for the day

e.g.2
situation: phoning the post office with questions
aim: how to post a parcel, cost, opening times to ask

characteristics of everyday listening;
- there are many situations for listening
- there is a definite aim
- you usually use other skills like writing, speaking and reading
e.g. 1 if you are asking the post office questions, you are also speaking and taking down notes
e.g. 2 when you are watching the weather forecast, you are also reading the text on the screen

What is happening when listening in everyday situations;
- you pick out the necessary info as you listen
- you link what you hear to your own background and experiences
- there are words are bits you do not pick up
- if you do not understand something, you ask questions
- you respond according to the content of what you hear
- you learn words through listening

2. Understanding mechanism;

input with content you do not understand -> input you understand -> apply -> output

bottom up model:
input with content you do not understand -> vocab knowledge -> verify meaning and mode

bottom up model understanding process:
characters -> words -> text -> sentences

topdown model:
background knowledge

real life - we use both to try understand what we hear

3. class activities
strategies when listening (almost same as above)
- you pick out the necessary info as you listen
- you link what you hear to your own background and experiences
- there are words are bits you do not pick up
- if you do not understand something, you ask questions
- you respond according to the content of what you hear
- you learn words through listening
- monitor your own understanding

3 parts to the class: a. pre listening b. during listening c. post listening

a. pre-listening ideas: flashcards, difficult words or pictures
- draw out students' knowledge, experience and information
- guess the content
- confirm important keywords, expressions, sentences
- make students aware of the aims of listening comprehensions

b. during listening
- confirm whether predictions / guesses were correct
- first time confirm the general meaning, and then more detailed the second time
- guess the words you do not know
- ask questions regarding the bits which are not understood
- monitor your own understanding

c. post listening
- give your views and feelings on what you have heard
- students give a presentation on the knowledge and information they have on what they have heard
- study the words and expressions in the text
- roleplay
- homework

books recommended are intermediate upwards - see Jme!

5. course plan and listening -
- are you using enough time in the course for listening?
- are you linking up with the other language skills of writing, speaking and reading
- are you using lots of different types of texts for students to experience different types of communications
- look at the can do statements in the japan foundation website http://www.jpf.go.jp/
