The Mysterious City of Gold
When I arrived at Kuelap the sun hadn't risen - I'd trekked from the Belen Valle and stayed overnight in Maria, about thirty minutes drive away along a very twisty, rough road. The only people I'd seen for the past three days, aside from my guide, had been mule drivers and people living on a coffee plantation. The site was completely empty when we got there and as the sun broke over the horizon it turned the walls of the city this incredible golden colour. It was a moment like this, without hundreds of other tourists, that really made me think I'd discovered the essence of adventure and excitement that motivates me to explore the world and to seek out new and wonderful places. Taken outside the main entrance of Kuelap, near Chachapoyas in Peru.
