The IRA abduction and murder of a suspected informer, a widowed mother of ten, begins this modern history of The Troubles, three decades of increasing violence in Northern Ireland. The story of a society wracked by a violent guerrilla war whose consequences have never been reckoned with. The 1998 ending of it, the Good Friday Agreement, is still controversial, and sporadic attacks continue.

Nationalists/republicans (mostly Catholics) wanting it to leave the UK and join a united Ireland; Loyalists (mostly Protestants) supported by the British Army wanting to remain in the United Kingdom.
