Drinking: A Love Story
Fifteen million Americans a year are plagued with alcoholism. Five million of them are women. Many of them, like Caroline Knapp, started in their early teens and began to use alcohol as "liquid armor," a way to protect themselves against the difficult realities of life. In this extraordinarily candid and revealing memoir, Knapp offers important insights not only about alcoholism, but about life itself and how we learn to cope with it.

The roots of alcoholism in the life of a brilliant daughter of an upper-class family are explored in this stylistic, literary memoir of drinking by a Massachusetts journalist. Caroline Knapp describes how the distorted world of her well-to-do parents pushed her toward anexoria and then alcoholism. Fittingly, it was literature that saved her: She found inspiration in Pete Hamill's A Drinking Life and sobered up. Her tale is spiced with the characters she's known along the way.

I couldn't resist this shot of my favorite all time terrier group. The one on the left was sporting a cool t- shirt which made me laugh, im still trying to think what the logo was,,probably something like "general dogsbody" or something. My grandfather Arthur Jiggins, loved these little dogs especially the Border Terriers and used the term "nice Juks". He said the word Juk was a Romany or Gypsy word for dog, i could never find any reference to it but after a long search i eventually came across it.He spent a lot of time with the Romany's around Croydon and used to drink with many of them, he picked up a lot of expressions and sayings. He was a mind of information and mixed with all types of people learning about their culture and styles, its only just occurred to me that its where i get my interest in people and photography from,45 years later lol!! One of my sayings is that something is "gert lush" and "Makes I laff" and then a few years ago, this t shirt company down in Bristol started to produce t shirts with these sayings on. The worrying things though, is that I actually spoke like that first. Despite the fact that I'm not actually from Bristol,I have an awful lot of family down there and spent loads of drinking time there when I was young as well as living there when I went to college in Weston. I suppose that some of it must have sunk in.
