Generation 1

1.       The ELDER1 BOWMAN was born in TN1. He married Unknown Unknown. She was born in VA2.

Notes for the Elder Bowman:

There has been no information recovered on the Elder Bowman's lineage. It is only known that he was born in TN and his wife was born in VA. Two of his children, Aaron and John, were also born in VA. Family legend speaks of a German heritage. However, since the spelling of Bowman is English, it is likely that his ancestors originated in England and may have migrated to Germany before coming to America.  Baughman, Baumann, & Bomann are some German variant spellings.  It also may be possible that his ancestors changed the spelling of their name after arriving in America.

More research needs to be done on the “Elder Bowman".  He may be Samuel Bowman (b. March 13, 1788 in TN, d. February 10, 1877 in Washington County, VA).  Some genealogists have him listed as the father of a Boy Bowman, b.1821 and a Boy Bowman, b. 1824. These boys could be Aaron & John Bowman. Samuel lived in Washington County, VA in 1850-1870 (1850, 1860, 1870 censuses). He had a younger wife, Elizabeth (b. 1807), who was 20 years younger than Samuel and had 4 children, all born after 1840. It looks like something happen to his 1st wife and perhaps his children from his 1st marriage were grown & had left home; they could be Aaron, John, and Alexander, who had a son, Joseph White Bowman (1844-1918). Joseph White Bowman lived near Aaron & John in OH and was reported to have been their nephew.

The Elder Bowman and Unknown Unknown had the following children:

i. AARON P.2 BOWMAN was born on September 20, 1820 in VA3. He died on October 02, 1875 in Elizabeth Township, Lawrence County, OH4. He married Melissa Squires, daughter of Benjamin Squires and Mary Unknown on February 04, 1847 in Scioto County, OH5. She was born about 1827 in OH6. She died on May 11, 19007.

ii. JOHN W. BOWMAN8 was born about 1825 in VA9, 10. He died on March 27, 1887 in Junior Furnace, Scioto County, OH11. He married (1) Mahala Squires, daughter of Benjamin Squires and Mary Unknown on October 13, 1852 in Scioto County, OH12. She was born about 1835 in Lawrence County, OH13. He married (2) Martha Squires, daughter of Benjamin Squires and Mary Unknown in 186014. She was born in June 1840 in OH15.

2.      AARON P.2 BOWMAN (the Elder1) was born on September 20, 1820 in VA3. He died on October 02, 1875 in Elizabeth Township, Lawrence County, OH4. He married Melissa Squires, daughter of Benjamin Squires and Mary Unknown on February 04, 1847 in Scioto County, OH5. She was born about 1827 in OH6. She died on May 11, 19007.

Notes for Aaron P. Bowman:

There is some uncertainty about Aaron's date of birth. The 1850 census listed his year of birth as about 1825. The 1860 & 1870 census listed his year of birth as about 1820. Lawrence County, OH death records list "Aaron P. Bowman… died 2 October 1875... age 55 years, 13 days... born in Virginia." By doing the math, this puts his date of birth as September 20, 1820.

It is known that Aaron had a brother, John, who was also born in VA. Aaron vouched for John at his first marriage (marriage record). Interestingly, Aaron and John married Squires sisters -- Aaron married Melissa and John married Mahala and Martha.

Aaron was a common man who labored hard making bricks and farming. His personal estate was reported as $100 in the 1860 census. Accounting for inflation, his personal estate would be worth only $4029 in year 2014 currency.

Aaron lived his adult life in southern OH near the borders of WV & KY. He moved frequently and rented as indicated in the 1850, 1860, & 1870 censuses, and his children's birthplaces.

Like his father, William was a common man who labored hard working in the brickyards. He was raised in southern OH, but most of his adult life, he resided just over the OH border in KY. He moved frequently and rented as indicated by the places of births for his children, and the 1900 & 1910 censuses. At the age of 62, the 1910 census reported that William was living back in Portsmouth, OH, where he died later that year.

Notes for Rachel Hannah Burke:

Rachel and William were married in OH, and shortly after they moved to KY where all their children were born. They moved frequently within KY and rented as indicated by the places of births for their children and the 1900 & 1910 censuses. In the 1900 census, Rachel's family was living just six houses down from her mother, Elizabeth, in Lewis County, KY. The 1910 census reported that they had moved back to OH. The 1920 census listed Rachel, her daughter, Geneva, and grandson, Wallace Hughes, living together in Detroit, MI. Rachel’s sons, Oscar, Oliver, and Edgar were also living in the Detroit area in 1920. At the time of her death, she was living back in Portsmouth, OH.

His father's obituary (dated September 17, 1910) listed him as being with the U.S. Army in the Philippine Islands. He re-enlisted June 14, 1912. He fought in WWI and was honorably discharged July 20, 1920. He must have re-enlisted again as evidenced by his occupation listed (1930 census) as Sergeant, U.S. Army at a university in Wabash Township, Tippecanoe County, IN (probably the military academy at Purdue University). The 1940 census lists his 1935 residence as Wabash Township, Tippecanoe County, IN; so, he may have still been in the U.S. Army in 1935 and perhaps even in later years. The 1940 census lists his 1940 residence as CA and his occupation as laborer; obviously, his military career was over.

George liked CA so much when he was in the service, he moved back there in the late 1930's and lived out his years there.

Notes for Edgar Bowman:

Edgar was born and raised in KY. At 18, Edgar was working as a blacksmith helper in OH. At age 24, he joined the U.S. Army Cavalry in which he served during WWI. Shortly after his discharge from the military, he married Viva and they moved to Detroit, MI where Edgar got a job at Ford Motor Company as a machine operator. Later in his career, he was a metal mixer and assisted engineering in fabricating metal at the Ford plant in Milford, MI. He retired from Ford Motor Company in his 60s.

In the 1940s, Edgar and Viva purchased an 80-acre farm in which they resided on for the rest of their lives. The farmhouse had electricity; it was a first for the family. Although there were some attempts at farming, it was never a serious endeavor. The farm was located at 6010 Fish Lake Rd., Holly, MI.

In his 50s, Edgar had a bout with cancer resulting in the removal of one eye. The grandchildren would get a kick out of seeing his glass eye on the bathroom sink where he would leave it overnight. His cancer laid in remission till the end of his life.
