Iffley, Oxfordshire
Iffley, Oxfordshire
The well known west front at Iffley.Iffley church is hidden downstream of Oxford amid the sprawl created by the Cowley car works. It lies in an oasis of cottages and chestnut trees, billowing with springtime blossom. Above the trees rises the celebrated, sturdy tower. Closer to, we see one of England's favourite Norman churches, heavily restored and with later insertions, but essentially as built in the 12th century. The church plan retains the original features of crossing tower, cl1ancel and unaisled nave. Only the west and east ends have been reconstructed, largely to rectify unsympathetic 17th-century alterations. The large west window is Victorian but based on archaeological evidence. The joy of Iffley is in the detail, in the chunky, barbaric richness of door and window surrounds. These are mostly carved with zigzag and beakhead over roll-moulding, creating a jazzy effect of monsters with huge beaks biting into long rolls of bread. In among these creatures are fighting horsemen, Samson and signs of the zodiac. Most elaborate, and apparently most original, is carving round the south doorway. The interior is dominated by mighty tower arches with more zigzag, foliage and rollmoulding, the decorative effect enriched with Purbeck marble shafts. These shafts are more characteristic of Early Gothic building and show Iffley bordering on Transitional. Indeed the chancel was partly rebuilt in the 13th century and has a rib vault and shafted lancet windows characteristic of Early Gothic. It also displays naturalistic carving, dragons, rosettes and a nesting bird, a glorious burst of exuberance. This exuberance is reflected in John Piper's glass installed in 1995 in the south-west window, given posthumously by his widow and composed of birds against a dark blue background.I last saw Iffley with an Easter wedding in progress. The air was filled with the scent of flowers, the organ was booming through the open doorway, and the gathering had thick Oxfordshire accents, now a rarity in this part of the county. (Simon Jenkins)
A late Norman (1170) show piece, and rightly so, within and without. W. front rich in beakhead and zigzag carving. Dark aisled interior shows eastward view of two elaborate Norman arches with vaulting between, leading to contrasting light Early English vaulted W. end. Unfortunate Victorian woodwork.JB

"your body lying on the bed" a poem picture by Nick Owen
"your body lying on the bed" a poem picture by Nick Owen
Her body lying on the bed Has found release within the vine From all her fears and suffering she fled This time I know that she is dead She's gone so far away, no longer mine Her body lying on the bed Looks so serene, and happy as the day we wed More peaceful than I've known her, and so fine From all her fears and suffering she fled The parting words have not been said That Good bye, for which I'll always pine Her body lying on the bed Of bluebells, on which our spirits fed Companion of flowers and woodland swine From all her fears and suffering she fled Into a world of beauty, where she led Us into the sublime Where all her fears and suffering have fled The image is a reposting. It is the key piece from my exhibition dedicated to Gill at The Rose and Crown Pub in Charlbury, Oxon, Uk. People either liked this a great deal or were repulsed by it. While curating the exhibition I wrote this poem, my first ever villanelle. I am not sure, maybe it is the best of me. Please comment.
