Key Bridge Marriott
Key Bridge Marriott
Perhaps the most obscure Watergate landmark is the parking lot at the Key Bridge Marriot. In April, 1972 (before the famed June 17 break-in), White House aide Alexander Butterfield used the Key Bridge Marriott parking lot to hand off $350,000 in cash – in $50 and $100 bills from a Nixon campaign “reserve fund” -- to Leonard Lilly, who was to make deliveries upon direction. Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward later met Deep Throat at an underground garage (believed the one next door) to hash over progress in digging up the dirt. ----------------------------------------- To that end, the Key Bridge Marriott’s casual Allie's American Grille has unveiled its timely Top Secret menu Featured are the Presidential Meatloaf ($12.95), from Pat Nixon’s own recipe (a favorite of the disgraced president), served with mashed potatoes and veggies. The meatloaf recipe (see Epicurean Blueprint below ) was once so popular that it was printed on White House stationery for mailing on request, and Marriott's Sears reports that Executive Chef Todd Schofield has "taken great care to ensure we are following the recipe as Mrs. Nixon intended.” Epicurean Blueprint: First Lady Pat Nixon's Meatloaf . . . Grist for the Mill: Now served at the Key Bridge Marriott, this meatloaf prepared from Pat Nixon's recipe and published in Chef Henry Haller’s “White House Family Cookbook,” has reaped kudos over the years, along with the occasional knock. Some cooks recommend boosting the herb quotient. Others happily report the meatloaf holds together well despite the call for an entire cup of milk. Given the Nixon administration's Imperial Presidency legacy, some seasoned foodies have snickered over the use of tomato puree instead of ketchup, suggesting that the latter would have been too bourgeois for the Nixon White House. Few would dispute, however, that this meatloaf must have provided comfort when needed most during the Nixon administration's memorable final days. Pat Nixon's Meatloaf 2 Tablespoons butter 1 Cup finely chopped onions 2 Garlic cloves, minced 3 Slices white bead 1 Cup milk 2 Pounds lean ground beef 2 Eggs, lightly beaten 1 Teaspoon salt Ground black pepper, to taste 1 Tablespoon chopped fresh parsley 1/2 Teaspoon dried thyme 1/2 Teaspoon dried marjoram 2 Tablespoons tomato puree 2 Tablespoons bread crumbs Grease a 13-by-9-inch baking pan. Melt butter in a saute pan, add garlic and saute until just golden -- do not brown. Let cool. Dice bread and soak it in milk. In a large mixing bowl, mix ground beef by hand with sauteed onions and garlic and bread pieces. Add eggs, salt, pepper, parsley, thyme and marjoram and mix by hand in a circular motion. Turn this mixture into the prepared baking pan and pat into a loaf shape, leaving at least one inch of space around the edges to allow fat to run off. Brush the top with the tomato puree and sprinkle with bread crumbs. Refrigerate for 1 hour to allow the flavors to penetrate and to firm up the loaf. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Bake meatloaf on lower shelf of oven for 1 hour, or until meat is cooked through. Pour off accumulated fat several times while baking and after meat is fully cooked. Let stand on wire rack for five minutes before slicing. Makes 6 servings.
Mocha Cream Chocolate Torte
Mocha Cream Chocolate Torte
This little guy won't be getting any cake, but we sure will! Desert for tonights turkey and ham dinner. It's a favourite of mine and my boys. I'll post the recipe for the icing in a bit. Okay, who wants to clean anyways? Bake a chocolate cake. Because I'm lazy, I used Duncan Hines mix. You're supposed to use the German Chocolate, but any chocolate will do. Today I used Chocolate Fudge. Mix and bake according to directions. I usually use 2 9" round cake pans, but for some reason unknown to me, one went missing, so I used 2 square 9" pans. I prefer round..... The icing is as follows: In a saucepan mix 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup cornstarch and 2 Tablespoons instant coffee. (I used instant espresso). Slowly add 1 1/4 cup of milk, stirring constantly. Heat over medium heat until mixture thickens and boils, stirring constantly. I use a wire whisk. Turn off heat, transfer to a bowl and cover with plastic wrap to prevent a skin from forming. I put the plastic directly on the mixture. Refrigerate until cold. Don't try to finish this recipe until it is VERY cold, I did this once and the icing literally fell off the cake! Best to make this the night before then go to bed.... Once it's cold, put 1 cup of butter or margerine in the mixer. Beat until fluffy and add 1/4 cup of icing sugar. I think it's called confectioners sugar in the US. Beat well, then gradually beat in the cooled mixture. Beat until light and fluffy. Then ice cake as usual. Sprinkle chocolate sprinkles on top and add some chocolate dipped almonds for decoration if you like. I got the recipe from a Pillsbury Bake Off cookbook years ago.
