Book of Leinster

The following is a translation of the Book of Leinster into English based upon the Gaelic diplomatic edition edited by R. I. Best and M. A. O'Brien (Dublin: Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, 1967) and volume 6 edited by Anne O'Sullivan.  I have given credit for each section and I accept full responsibility for mistakes (largely in the OCR process but, especially in volume 6, in my own inept translations).  Currently, this is an imperfect translation for numerous reasons.

Those sections I feel confident about, I have highlighted in green, yellow for those that have potential problems or are unfinished translations, and red for those that have not been translated yet.

I welcome any comments, suggestions, corrections, or translations.  Jim Kinsella at:

“I may say with sorrow that there is not in all Europe any nation but this of ours [Ireland] that would not long since have made a national literary fortune out of such a volume, had any other country in Europe been fortunate enough to possess such an heirloom of history.”

Eugene O'Curry

Disinherited

I stand before the Book of Ballymote,

The Book of Leinster, the Leabhar Breac, las

That oldest, Leabhar na hUidhre -- tomes that hold

My people's history in a thousand ranns:

I cannot read a word.

I do not know the tongue my fathers spoke,

I cannot sing the songs my fathers sang.

I cannot read the books my fathers wrote;

Treasure on treasure in my hungry hands:

I cannot read a word.

The tables of my race are here: old lore

And tale; poems our bards were proud to chant to chiefs

How dare I name me Irish Poet?

Here is my heritage, and her I stand:

I cannot read a word.
