VPA stands for the
Visual and Performing Arts Magnet program at Booker Middle School. The mission of the program is “to identify highly interested and talented students and provide them with an enriched, culturally diverse, and technology-infused arts education.
Dragonfly Poets visit Sarasota Bay Club!
Some of our VPA Creative Writing students, otherwise known as the "Dragonfly Poets" visited the Sarasota Bay Club on Friday, May the 3rd, and read their poetry to the residents!
VPA Graphic Design Students WINNERS of USF Ticket Design Contest!
Two of our Graphic Design students, Kayin Pinkney and Stephon Turner, had their designs chosen in the USF Ticket Design Contest! Their designs were two chosen out of the seven winners. Creative Writing Students Recognized in Poetry Contest
Congratulations to Payton Saturen, Seth Morano, Hannah Beatt, Asia Pollack, Alex Finnerty, and Peighton Zook-all VPA Creative Writing students who had their poetry selected to be a part of the Young Voices Poetry Reading . The event will be at Florida Studio Theatre at 10 am on the morning of May 4. Tickets are $12 and are available at www.floridastudiotheatre.org
Over 100 entries were received for the Reading, which is a part of PoetryLife weekend, May 3-4. It honors students, educators and the creative community in which we live and features poets in middle & high school who have been writing poetry under the guidance of their teachers.
A discussion with former U.S. Poet Laureate, W. S. Merwin, and poet Naomi Shihab Nye will follow the reading. Sponsored by Bookstore1Sarasota, Florida Studio Theatre, Gulf Coast Community Foundation and The Sarasota Reading Council.
The judging process went as follows. Each submission was
stripped of all identifying information. First line judging was
done by The Sarasota Reading Council, then the final 12 readers were selected by MFA students in Vanderbilt's poetry graduate program. Of
these 12, it is yet to be selected who will get special recognition by the SRC at a dinner event on the evening of May 4.
VPA Drama Students Honored
Congratulations to student playwrights Grace Gerdes, Haley Rosenthal, Carter Sabuda, and Eli Schildkraut for receiving honors from the 2013 Young Playwrights Festival associated with the Florida Studio Theatre Write A Play program.
Grace and Haley received an Honorable Mention for their play “The Callback” in the SEVEN UP category (only 11 out of 3000 playwrights received this honor).
Carter and Eli were selected as winning playwrights in the SEVEN UP category for their play “The Title” and will receive a professional staged reading of their play. Only 13 playwrights were selected for this award this year!
This program had submissions from students all over the world, from Israel, to Scotland, to Russia! It is a high honor for our BMS students' work to be recognized.
Also, all four students will receive medals and certificates in an awards ceremony scheduled for May 11th.
VPA Chorus Students perform the National Anthem
On March 3, Four of our VPA Chorus Students performed the National Anthem at the Baltimore Orioles game at Ed Smith Stadium! They were well received by the crowd and got to hang out with the Orioles mascot!

Chorus ratings at MPA Festival:
Chorus went to district MPA Festival on Saturday, March 2. They received two Superiors and two Excellents, with their overall rating being an Excellent. Congratulations Booker Middle Chorus!
VPA Creative Writing honors:
Seventh grade Creative Writing VPA student, Grace Castilow's submission to Embracing Our Differences was selected as Best of Show quote for the 2013 show. In the past three years, Booker Middle School quotes have been selected twice as best of show. This honor brings with it a monetary reward for the program.
Booker Middle is also represented with a quote by 6th grade writer, Michael Clancy. Their teacher, Joanna Fox was selected in the adult category.

Since the inception of the Embracing Our Differences program, Booker Middle has had numerous representations in both quotes and art.
VPA Drama Students Earn High Ratings at State:
Congratulations Booker Middle VPA Drama students! 1 Superior and 2 Excellents were earned at the State Junior Thespian Festival in Melbourne, FL on February 9! We are very proud of our talented students!
