Over the weekend of 29th – 30th September the District Camping Challenge took place at Selby Woods Scout Campsite. Below is a short report from the Event Organiser, Dave Mason:
A big thank you to all the scouts who took part in the District Camping Challenge. We had a great set of kids taking part ranging from those with experience to 7th Crams brand new scout who had only been to scouts for a couple of weeks before.
The sun shone (most of the time) the grass squelched underfoot and all those who took part worked really well together setting up their camp and being self sufficient for the weekend.
The competition was judged by Mark Berry (cooking) from Wylam district and Ian Ellison the District Commissioner from Wansbeck (Pioneering and Backwoods cooking) who were both impressed by the standards of food presented, complexity of items built and the general enthusiasm by those taking part.
The family from Selby House came down to sample the Saturday food and commented on the skills shown by all the teams to cook a 3 course meal on open fires, they sampled all the food and were really impressed by how well and how hard all the teams had worked.
A special mention goes to Thomas from 7th Cram who sat and made pizzas backwood style when his team mates went off to play football and only returned when they were cooked – very calm and laid back in his approach and very delicious was the comment made about the pizzas.
The competition was won by the Red team (10th Blyth) with Yellow (7th Cramlington) in second place, Purple followed in Third and fourth place went to Blue (Seaton Delaval). Well done to everyone.
A big thank you to the leaders for encouraging the scouts to take part and for all the help given over the weekend which made the camp such a great event.
We will be running the competition again in a couple of years time – hopefully everyone will take part in the next one making it an even bigger and better than this year.
