In memory of Blake
While Zack was in surgery, we found out that a friend had passed away.Vista + PJ64 + Mario Kart + Xbox 360 Wireless Controller
Tina met and made friends with Blake, an 18 year old, when we were in the cancer ward when Zack was first diagnosed with leukemia. She told him I was into the XBox 360. Blake had one there in his room, so I stopped by with some games of my own. Blake and I had played together and I had borrowed him some games to play while he was there. Turns out he liked sports games and PDZ more than my COD2 and Oblivion! It's tough when you are by yourself most of the time like Blake. He'd wake up in the middle of the night to play when he had no one else to play with. Someone else from Microsoft had been in the ward and had helped him get his wireless connected to his 360. His father had mailed him a Live account. We traded gamertags to play online together.
Blake had been surviving with this disease for about 6 years and unfortunately was all too familiar with hospitals, needles and being sick. That didn't hold his spirit back. If you were to meet him, you'd see a spirit that shone through all the difficulty and was stronger than most 18 year olds I've met. He was making the best of his situation there. Being a teenager and being locked in a ward that was very small, there wasn't a lot to do. At times, he was confined to his room. Other times he was able to get up and walk about the ward a bit.
Blake and his family were from back East and had originally been in Boston for his care. They came to Seattle because they were looking for better care, and Seattle Childrens had it. His Mom was constantly by his side. His sister was there visiting when we were in the ward with Zack. The treatments were hard on Blake, and watching him go through this was extremely hard on his family. I can't even imagine.
His condition had taken a turn for the worse a few weeks back. He picked up some sort of bacteria while out of his room. Tina received a call from his mom, and had gone to visit them on Friday. He was in rough shape at that time. His mother was dealing with the reality of having to make funeral preparations. She was a very strong woman to go through this for so many years.
Later that day, he passed on. We were gone all weekend, and hadn't checked voice mail. We didn't find out until this morning when Tina went up to the ward to check in on him. Tina was able to speak to the nurses and with his step father over the phone, and his mom had gone back East.
When Tina came back down to tell me, we just held each other in our arms with the tears flowing.
We'll miss you Blake.
PJ64 emulating Mario Kart on Windows Vista. Runs smooth, except for full screen. In window mode both video and sound is great. Installed the Wireless USB dongle that lets me connect all my 360 controllers to the PC. Even get the "notification" in real 360 style on the PC. Oh yeah!
