The town of STRESA

Thanks to its fantastic location in front of the Borromee islands and thanks to its favourable climate, Stresa is nowadays a famous lakeside resort, that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.

From the Middle-ages to the 18th century Stresa was just a fishing village.
Thanks to the construction of the Napoleonic route in 1806 many aristocrats from Milan and from other European countries started to arrive in Stresa.
The historic Grand Hotel et des Iles Borromées was inaugurated in 1863.
In 1906 the Simplon railway tunnel was opened and the Orient Express train started to leave international travellers in Stresa. In 1911 the rack railway line Stresa-Mottarone was built  and that was a very nice trip to the top a mountain.
Stresa is today a lovely town with an elegant atmosphere. Many hotels, a  scenic lakefront promenade, good cafes and restaurants, little shops and boutiques and plenty of things to do and see in the surroundings. It is undoubtedely an excellent base for day trips and excursions in the lake Maggiore and Orta area and not only. Day trips from Stresa can include Switzerland, lake Como and Bellagio, Milan and Zermatt.
