Powerhead Undergravel Filter

powerhead undergravel filter
    undergravel filter
  • A type of filter placed under the substrate that utilizes an air pump or power head to pull water through the gravel and thus oxygenates the bacteria to help in the nitrogen cycle. Not recommended for live plant tanks.
  • a device for enhancing bacterial nitrification in substrate, made of a slotted plate which is placed under the substrate.
  • Aquarium filters are critical components of both freshwater and marine aquaria.Leibel WS (1993) A fishkeepers guide to South American cichlids. Tetra Press. Belgium pg 12-14. Aquarium filters remove physical and soluble chemical waste products from aquaria, simplifying maintenance.
    powerhead
  • A powerful egomaniac
  • A powerhead, bang stick, or shark stick is a specialized firearm used underwater that is fired when in direct contact with the target. Powerheads are often used for spear fishing, and against sharks or alligators for sport, defense, or to kill nuisance animals.
  • Any of various mechanical or electrical devices, including
  • A submersible pump for an aquarium that creates current within a tank
  • A small submersible pump. They have only one moving part, called the impeller. They are useful to create current within a tank or to drive filters such as under gravel filters, canisters and protein skimmers.
  • A small submersible pump commonly used inside an aquarium to provide additional water movement. Several powerheads can be used in conjunction with a controller unit to simulate natural wave actions.

AquaClear Powerhead 10 - 110 V, 80 Gallons per Hour
The AquaClear Powerhead 10 is a multifunctional pump for aquariums up to 10 gallons, that delivers outstanding performance in a variety of applications. It can efficiently drive under-gravel filters, circulate and aerate aquarium water, and attach to filtration accessories such as the AquaClear Quick Filter to support crystal clear water conditions. The Powerhead 10 can be used to raise oxygen levels, which is important when there are increases in water temperature or fish population, as well as during the treatment of diseases. It can also be connected to drive protein skimmers, which are essential devices for most marine aquariums. The Powerhead is indispensable in smaller reef aquariums where it can be easily hidden and still provide highly beneficial currents. Freshwater aquariums also benefit from additional currents in many applications. In addition to being the ultimate submersible pump in its category, the Powerhead also includes the following design, safety and utility innovations: a compact, energy-efficient, and completely submersible motor unit that is insulated in epoxy resin to protect against harsh fresh and salt water environments; adjustable flow control; convenient suction cups for easy installation; and an output hose adapter that allows easy attachments to protein skimmers, spray bars, and other accessories. Using a Powerhead in combination with an AquaClear Quick Filter provides additional safe mechanical filtration for cleaner water conditions and the protection of baby fish.

Fish Tank
Fish Tank
40 (maybe 45?) gallon aquarium. 36 w, 12 deep, 18-19" high. Includes filter, undergravel filter, python water changer, air pump, lots of tank toys, all filter media, and all the accumulation of tubing and such a fish enthusiast might desire. My last fish (Puff) died, aged about 9 years old and I don't want to start over. (Black moor goldfish.) The cabinet was bought used from a local pet store - it has a bunch of power strips inside; the first owner had lizards which apparently needed like 10 plugs. The back of the cabinet is open. ("Not suitable to use for a room divider unless you put a back on it.") The tank is about five years old and has only been exposed to fish. Comes with about 15 years worth of stuff. The filter shown here was my backup filter, and is brand new. (The box was opened, but everything inside is still in the original plastic packaging. The filter I had been using had been discontinued and it was getting harder to get filter bags for it and is not included; it was 15 years old and going to break soon.) This also comes with a light that goes across the top. It covers half the tank; half is open to the room. (There is a plastic second piece that can be used to close off the rest of the tank if desired.)
The Redesigned Tank
The Redesigned Tank
This is Emma's fishtank after a redesign. I took out the undergravel filter, since bettas don't need a filter anyway, and added a little Tiki God sort of thing. When I first put in the decoration, the betta was flaring his gills at it and trying to attack its stomach!
