On a cold July night in 2001 a panic-stricken woman dashed out of the desert scrub, bringing to a halt a huge outback road train. The story that Joanne Lees told, of her abduction and boyfriend's apparent murder, has held the world's attention ever since. Award winning journalist, Richard Shears, covered the story from the first days right up until the verdict was handed down at the end of an eight week trial. After 40 years of covering wars, disasters and crimes for London's Daily Mail, Shears says the Falconio affair is one of the most curious he remembers.

can’t sleep very well. feels like i’m falling, i guess that makes sense, they call it "falling asleep", feels like i’m floating in an ocean, that makes sense too, they call it "drifting off", but i gotta wonder why there’s no expression related to spinning, because i feel alot like i’m spinning very fast in uneven circles, "spiraling out of control" maybe. i spent the night rolling in a continuous attempt to find a comfy spot in my giant bed, as i often do, tangling my blankets & contorting my limbs until i was completely sideways on my mattress, my head hanging off the edge. & that was how i fell asleep, well as asleep as i fell i mean, i could sortof feel myself talking & moving & scratching my neck.. it was sometime around 3am i assume, & i have to assume because i don’t have a clock. i mean, i’ve got a clock but i never look at it. i listen to all the mechanical noises of gears grinding while it ticks & tocks all night though, it echoes. eyes movin’ from side to side, tail wagging. but i never read the time. yeah, my eyes were opened. & i remember suddenly the sun was up, & it was getting lighter & lighter, & there was a face watching me from the wrinkles in my sheets, the face of a dog, a big grey dog. my back hurt, i rolled over to rub my spine & noticed a blue ball point pen had been under me for an undetermined chunk of the early morning. & i looked at my hands, i looked at my wrists, it said "chloroform" in smudged blue ink just above my birdy tattoo. & i closed my eyes again. my head felt like it might explode, with every heartbeat my inner eyelids surged bizarro colors, combinations of red & purple, orange & yellow. i was diagonal now, i realized, my head resting in one corner at the foot of the bed, my feet on a pillow at the top right corner. i sat up, facing a mirror, & noticed i was wearing a light blue nylon dress. i guess i’d put it on sometime in the night, i must’ve grabbed it off the floor from the mountain of clothes that blankets the carpet. there were small bloodstains all over the back, i had scratched myself again. i remembered i had a dream, i was at a thrift store, shoplifting, i was putting on layers of clothes ontop of my clothes, i ran out the door with a ball of cardigans in my hands, & they were falling as i ran. i fell down a hill, losing everything as i rolled, & at the bottom of the hill i paniced trying to pull dead grass out of my hair. i looked in the mirror above the bed, searching my hair for twigs, but only found feathers.
