This airport was built during WWII as part of the BCATP. It was home to No. 14 Elementary Flying training School and also No. 7 Air Observer School, both under RCAF No. 2 Training Command with HQ in Winnipeg. 

After the war it became a peace-time RCAF station.From 1953 to 1958 CFB Portage la Prairie and was home to #2 Advanced Flying School where NATO trainee pilots (including Canadians) flew T-33 "Silver Star" jet planes ("T-Birds") as the final phase in their progression to receiving their "Wings". Later on it became home to 3 Canadian Forces Flying Training School which was under 14 Training Group, also based in Winnipeg, for many years. 

Today the military training has been mostly privatized and is now run here by Bombardier Aerospace. 

December 18, 1992 - Oakville, Manitoba
A CN freight train derailed three diesel locomotives and 29 cars of a 41-car train on the main line at Oakville, Manitoba, about 50 kilometres west of Winnipeg. Twenty-four of the derailed cars were transporting dangerous goods and five of these cars were ruptured. Three hundred and forty-five tons of product was spilled.
CAUSE: A locomotive axle failure arising from inadequate lubrication of a traction-motor suspension bearing.
EVACUATED: 410 residents of the town of Oakville and surrounding area

After the Minnesota massacre in 1862 the unpopular Sioux Indians escaped from the Dakotas, in the United States, and migrated into Manitoba. Claiming the protection of Queen Victoria, whom they called the “Great White Mother,” they established themselves in a fortified camp on what became known as Flee Island.
