If You Want to Know How I Do Rainbow Hair
If You Want to Know How I Do Rainbow Hair
Keep in mind that I'm not a professional. This is just how I dye my hair. I'm not suggesting that you do this to yourself or anyone else. But people ask me how I do it, so this is how I do it: You will need bleach, hair dye, as many pairs of latex gloves as containers of bleach and dye, a corresponding number of brushes for application. 1) Wash hair. 2) Condition heavily and work out all the tangles with fingers. 3) Rinse and wrap in towel. 4) Divide hair into several sections -- I do quarters, then divide each quarter into quarters. 5) Prepare bleach. I used two boxes this time. 6) Wearing gloves and using a brush, start at the front, do the roots all around, then coat the length of each section of hair (I usually only do my roots). 7) Wrap hair in plastic, then wrap a towel around the whole thing. Carry another towel with you to catch drips. Feel scalp sizzle and wish you were dead. 8) Check your hair every once in a while. When it's white, you're done. This can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours. It's painful and you'll never want to do it again. 9) Carefully rinse with cold water to soothe burning scalp. 10) Condition hair heavily and work out the tangles with your fingers. Rinse. 11) Wash hair. 12) Condition again, de-tangle again. Rinse. Wrap in towel. 13) Divide hair into sections again. This time according to the pattern you want in your hair. I did strips this time, parted in the middle. 14) Arrange bottles of color so that harmonious shades are next to each other in front of you on the counter---blue next to yellow blends together to make green, for instance...orange next to purple makes ick gross---so that as the colors wash out and start to blend together over time they form colors you like. 15) Wearing gloves and using a brush, start at the front hairline and work your way back, covering each section of hair with dye from roots to ends. Wrap each finished section in plastic as you go. You will end up with many plastic bundles on your head. The idea is to not let the colors touch each other. I also did different colors down the length of each section of hair, so I had to tear off a 3 feet length of plastic wrap, seal it around the whole length of hair and then roll it up like a tiny sleeping bag. 16) Wrap your entire assortment of plastic wrapped bundles in more plastic to secure everything. 17) Keep it on there for as long as you can stand it. I lasted over an hour. 18) Rinse. Condition heavily, work out the tangles with your fingers. 19) Squeeze all the water out of your hair and glop on a ton of conditioner. Let it sit for as long as you can stand it. It's been over 24 hours for me so far. Let it air dry. 20) You're done. Rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball will take any dye off your skin. If you used Manic Panic, bleach will remove the dye from any surfaces in your bathroom. If you used Special Effects, get down on your knees and pray while scrubbing with bleach---but you'll be there till the second coming because in my experience Special Effects clings to bathroom surfaces like grim death. So don't spill any. You might want to put a towel over your pillowcase before going to bed and don't wear any light colored shirts until you're sure the colors won't rub off on fabrics, no matter what kind of dye you used.
Vampire Shag
Vampire Shag
Manic Panic Vampire Red. My world was turned upside down when my cosmetology instructor informed me that my favorite Jazzing semi-permanent hair color is actually full of metallic salts. I love Jazzing and I had no idea it was bad. I was going to use it again tonight.. So now I have awkwardly lightened pinkish red hair and I have no idea what to do! My first thought was to modify my new Vampire Red with Jazzing Red Hot to make it a natural-ish red for a school function I have coming up (where I have to look "professional" and make a speech), but now it's too dark, too pink, and Jazzing Red Hot is metallic and not good for my hair! I have until Thursday at 8am to make this work. I'm fucked. Tuesday (tomorrow) night I will most likely spend using dish soap and alcohol to remove the metallic salts (as recommended by my cosmetology instructor) and most of the color you see here, plus old Jazzing Cocoa Bean i had used before this. Hopefully that will dull it to a lighter, faded pink. Then I guess I'll have to use Jazzing Red Hot again because it's all I know of semi-permanent colors to get the shade I like. When I have a larger time frame, I will search for healthier semi-permanent options. By the way, I used semi-permanents because I don't like using developer on my already outrageously damaged hair, so I don't want to use permanent colors. Especially with how often I change my color anyway.
