  • The shade serves the important function of blocking the glare from a light bulb and is usually the most decorative part of a lamp. The lamp shade can be made of glass, fabric, metal, or other more creative materials.
  • A cover for a lamp, used to soften or direct its light
  • lampshade: a protective ornamental shade used to screen a light bulb from direct view
  • A lampshade is a fixture that covers the lightbulb on a lamp to diffuse the light it emits. Conical, cylindrical and other forms on floor-, desk- or table top-mounted as well as suspended lamp models are the most common and are made in a wide range of materials.

I see hundreds of old lamp bases for .50 cents to a couple of bucks at antique shops, flea markets etc . thought they would serve quite well as candle holders . the type of candle I find works best is what is sometimes called a 'library candle' . they are not tapered, and have a narrower diameter base that fits the lamp bases exactly . I would suggest adding wax shields as well, simply cut a disc to whatever size works for you with a hole in the center that just lets the diameter of the base of the candle (the part that fits into the lamp base) just fit. This will sit nicely on the rim of the lamp base under the candle to catch the wax . Just don't plug in the lamps :) . If you intend to use the lamps just for this purpose, cut the cords off . Shades could be used (watch out for any fire hazards) . You will want to modify the harp, or make something that can support a glass shade . The yokes as they are may heat up too much as the flame is directly under the metal at the top of the yoke.

I thought this was so pretty when I found it. The pinkish shade of glass & the lid that opens & has a little handle...too sweet! I'm guessing it's from an old oil lamp. Thinking about adding it over a few tiny white or PINK Christmas lights or maybe a tea candle? It's also gorgeous by itself
