The Valley of Horses (Earth's Children, Book Two)
The Valley of Horses (Earth's Children, Book Two)
This unforgettable odyssey into the distant past carries us back to the awesome mysteries of the exotic, primeval world of The Clan of the Cave Bear, and to Ayla, now grown into a beautiful and courageous young woman.

Cruelly cast out by the new leader of the ancient Clan that adopted her as a child, Ayla leaves those she loves behind and travels alone through a stark, open land filled with dangerous animals but few people, searching for the Others, tall and fair like herself. The short summer gives her little time to look, and when she finds a sheltered valley with a herd of hardy steppe horses, she decides to stay and prepare for the long glacial winter ahead. Living with the Clan has taught Ayla many skills but not real hunting. She finally knows she can survive when she traps a horse, which gives her meat and a warm pelt for the winter, but fate has bestowed a greater gift, an orphaned foal with whom she develops a unique kinship. One winter extends to more; she discovers a way to make fire more quickly and a wounded cave lion cub joins her unusual family, but her beloved animals don’t fulfill her restless need for human companionship. Then she hears the sound of a man screaming in pain. She saves tall, handsome Jondalar, who brings her a language to speak and an awakening of love and desire, but Ayla is torn between her fear of leaving her valley and her hope of living with her own kind.

Lopar: Rajska plaza (Paradise beach)
Lopar: Rajska plaza (Paradise beach)
The crystal clear adriatic Sea laps the unspoilt and diverse shores of the island that make the whole island a unique seaside resort. The island offers a beach to everyone s taste: rocky beach, peble beach and sandy beaches like a famous "Paradise beach" at the Lopar holiday resort. Lopar is a picturesque tourist place, the furthermost village on the island, situated in a fertile valley approximately 14 km away from the old town of Rab. Rab, Lopar, Rajska plazaLopar's 2km long sandy Paradise Beach (Rajska plaza) is one of the most famous beaches on the Adriatic. The finest of sand, shallow, crystal clear and warm sea water (up to 28°C in the Summer months), the greenest pine forest which offers protection and shade are surely just some of the reasons why numerous guests are attracted. Due to the shallow sea level, the beach is perfect for inferior swimmers, children and elderly people. Near the beach there is San Marino hotels village and the biggest camping on the island, as well as many private apartments to rent. Sandy shallow waters are long and it takes about 500 m until the sea comes half the waist of an adult on this, in summer quite crowded beach. In the vicinity there is a large sports centre containing a variety of playing fields and courts (tennis, football, basketball, volleyball), minigolf, table tennis, water slide and a variety of other water sports activities. The beach has restaurants, bars, life-guards, life-saving equipment, first-aid equipment, facilities for the disabled, rental facilities, recycable waste facilities, catering facilities, phones, etc. The life-guards are present from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The beach has been honored by Blue Flag award. A short walk from Lopar there are other sandy beaches, some of them used by naturists, with Sahara, Ciganka and Stolac being the most beautiful and popular.
Longyearbyen campsite
Longyearbyen campsite
Longyearbyen Camping is situated at 78? 15? Nord. There is no other camping site further north with comparable facilities anywhere else on Earth. To the very North Pole, it is just another 1300 km, mostly across the drifting ice of the Arctic Ocean. Even Thule in Greenland is further south, and the mass tourism of North Cape in Norway is for us about as far south, as some of the mediterranean mass resorts from London. Overnight stay figures vary widely from year to year and have been anything between 1500 to 3400 annually during the last years, with guests from 15-30 countries. In other words: a small, cosy campsite with the atmosphere of a big international family on most days. From 1998 to 2007, Spitsbergen Tours, also the first tour operator registered in Spitsbergen, had leased the campsite. In 2007, it was put on sale by the former owner due to necessary major refurbishment investments, and Michelle van Dijk (at that time working for Spitsbergen Tours) and Andreas Umbreit (owner of Spitsbergen Tours) took the step of buying Longyearbyen Camping, running it jointly since then. The necessary major investment of 2007, a new and expensive freshwater pipe to, and a new sewage pipe from the campsite, are finally frost-protected, thus allowing to extend the season in the summer period and even to offer an opening in spring (usually April to early May). ----- Longyearbyen campsite is a lovely and also unexpected place - however, may become quite busy in the peak summer season, when various adventurers use the site as a base for exploration of Longyearbyen and surrounding fjords and valleys. The low sun round the clock illuminates the landscape heavily - it's hard to sleep when such a play of light happens outside...
