THE BLACK COUNTESS FROM BAIN STREET (Never Kissed by the Queen)

"I have just taken the first fledgling steps towards producing what I hope to be an internationally significant documentary film about one of the most extraordinary cross-cultural love stories ever - that of the daughter of a Cape slave, and a nobleman from one of the greatest British dynasties - thanks to development funding from the South African National Film & Video Foundation, who are committed to my project.

If you’ve landed on this site, it means that you’re either a loyal supporter, and/or, like me, someone with a love of culture, history, and fascinating, little-known tales such as that of Harry and Martha Grey (aka Lord and Lady Stamford) which have helped to shape and enrich nations such as ours.

I hope soon to be able to report that my passion has proved infectious, attracting others who would like to share (and perhaps assist on a more material basis), in the telling of this tale."

Maggie Follett - Writer, Producer and Director - Potboiler Productions

A project by POTBOILER PRODUCTIONS South Africa, now in proud association with BELVEDERE FILM USA, “The Black Countess from Bain Street” is a proudly Wellington-based initiative that aims to involve creatives, crew and cast members predominantly from the town (and surrounding Drakenstein Valley), former home of the 8th Countess of Stamford, and the place where she met her future husband.

It is hoped that in so doing, our documentary tribute will contribute in a small way towards the upliftment of the area, and help position this little-known gem in the Cape Boland’s wine-producing region firmly on the local and international tourism map.
