The Fashion Fix
The Fashion Fix
Elle: Welcome, and thanks for tuning in to this week’s episode of Fashion Fix, where we do quick critiques of the latest celebrity looks! As you know, I’m Elle Santini and this I’m surrounded by an amazing gang of fashionistas and fashionistos. We have, teen top model Farrah Cunningham; aspiring model and girlfriend of Rom Thorpe, Brie Hadley; the man who keeps my hair and the rest of Hollywood looking perfect, Abe; and last, but not least my fellow G.L.A.M. TV correspondent, Blake Fisher. Alrighty then, we‘ve got a lot of fashion to cover this time, so let‘s not wait any longer and begin with the Model Lux relaunch fashion show. Farrah: I thought the show was fabulous! I loved the idea of having the models providing their own wardrobe to wear, brilliant. Elle: Ok, so let‘s get started on who‘s personal styles we loved and hated, starting with Kendra. Brie: I thought she looked fab-u-lous! J‘adore her striped jumpsuit so much and how she paired it with the pink jewelry! Blake: So did I, it was the perfect indirect homage to the classic Barbie look and has a vintage meets modern vibe. She‘s got amazing taste! Elle: Ok, next up is Irina. Now, can I just say that I particularly wasn’t all that impressed with her look or her hair in the show. Her forehead looked rather… huge to me sitting in the front row. Farrah: On the contrary, I thought is perfectly reflected her ‘keep it casual‘ style. I thought the outfit was uber cute and I need those Pastry sneakers in my life. Abe: I agree with Farrah, I‘d take those in my size too. And I thought her hair was wonderful, the pulled back hair really suits her much better than the long bang that she usually sports. It really showed off those fab dangle earrings she was rocking. Elle: Next up for discussion would be… Nathan. Farrah: I just have to get this out there, I was more focused on his face than his clothes, he is SOO hot! Abe: And the guy can wear anything and make it work. I bet that if he wore a Hefty bag, a ton of guys would rush to Target and clean out the stock! Brie: That‘s true. His outfit had so much personality and I loved his Ken medallion necklace a lot too. Elle: Ok, on to Benji now. Thoughts? Abe: He can rock skinnies like nobody‘s business. HOT! I have a love for the rocker look and he really pulls it off well. Blake: I liked the outfit itself, but I thought he over accessorized. The single glove AND studded bracelet AND beanie was total hipster rocker overkill. Farrah: It all worked for me personally. The single glove is a major trend for guys this season and the studded bracelet was meant to compliment the cross medallion necklace when you really focus in every element of the outfit. Elle: Ok, why not move on to his twin, Preston. Blake: Wasn‘t a fan. I never liked this California tradition of pairing preppy polos with hipster slouchy hats and surfer flip flops. Elle: I thought he looked great and loved how he mixes very distinct looks in an outfit. To me, half the fun of fashion is experimenting and taking risks. He’s oozing West Coast charm. Elle: Next would be Gwen. How hot were those brown lace-up boots? Farrah: Right? I SO need those in my closet ASAP along with that long paisley print vest! Brie: Same here, her pieces were totally drool worthy. Blake: Must be a girl thing because again, I wasn‘t a fan of the style mixing. Elle: Well, maybe Julia‘s look pleased you, Blake. Blake: It actually did, I loved the pops of yellow against the pink and grays of the sweater. The outfit meshed without being matchy-matchy. Farrah: It was cute, but nothing really screamed ‘must have’ or grabbed me compared to the other girls in the show. Elle: I sense a little tension from that comment. Why no Julia love? Farrah: Don’t go there, Elle. Elle: Ok, ok. Up next is… Trevor. Brie: I liked his look, he totally looked like a living Ken doll. Right? Abe: I prefer mine darker with brown eyes, but that‘s another subject. He was kind of like a male version of Irina with the vest-denim-sneaker combo now that I think about it. Elle : True, but I thought he pulled off the casual look so much better than her. And that ‘Ultimate Boyfriend‘ T, I totally need one for Mick! Ok, another look I loved was Tanzie. Farrah: Same here, her chain suspenders on those jeans were killer, so fab. Blake: They were, but I didn’t like the hemline of her jeans. The looked really highwater to me. I also thought the gold was unnecessary. Abe:
A Rare Roman Gold Solidus of Aelia Verina, Wife of Leo I (457-474 C.E.)
A Rare Roman Gold Solidus of Aelia Verina, Wife of Leo I (457-474 C.E.)
Aelia Verina, wife of Leo I Solidus, Constantinopolis 471 or 473, AV 4.39 g. AEL VERI – NA AVG Pearl-diademed and draped bust r., wearing necklace and earrings, crowned by the Hand of God. Rev. VICTOR – IA AVGGG Victory standing l., supporting long jewelled cross; in field r., star. In exergue, CONOB. RIC 631. MIRB 4a. LRC 593. Depeyrot 93/2.Extremely rare. Virtually as struck and Fdc As the wife of Leo I and the mother-in-law of his successor Zeno, Aelia Verina held the title of Augusta for nearly the last three decades of her life. We have relatively detailed accounts of her machinations from 474 onward, and considering all of the power plays being made at court during Leo’s reign, we might presume she was deeply involved in the intrigues. When her husband Leo I was ailing in 473, Verina helped arrange his adoption of their six-year-old grandson, Leo II, as successor rather than their son-in-law Zeno, a healthy man in his mid-30s with significant military experience. Despite his ideal qualifications, Zeno was not well liked, a feeling that Leo and Verina must have shared. The child Leo II was first raised to Caesar in October, 473, and finally to Augustus in January, 474, less than a month before his grandfather died. The saga continued when the already fragile health of Leo II began to fail and it was necessary on February 9, 474, to have the boy proclaim his own father, Zeno, his co-emperor. When Leo II died in November, the cause of his demise must have been the fodder of palace gossip. Zeno was now sole emperor, and this displeased his mother-in-law Verina so much that she caused a false rumour to be spread of an impending palace coup, upon which she recommended that Zeno and Ariadne flee Constantinople for their own safety. Verina now hoped to get her lover, the magister officorum Patricius, installed as emperor, but she met unexpected resistance in the senate which instead hailed emperor her brother Basiliscus. Thus, after her initial plot against her son-in-law, Verina now plotted against her brother, who responded by executing her lover Patricius. Once again, Roman history proves truth is stranger than fiction. The old empress was forced into hiding as she worked for the return of Zeno as the lesser of two evils. Once Zeno recovered his throne from Basiliscus, Verina still devoted the rest of her life to undermining Zeno, which resulted in her exile to a fortress in the wilds of Isauria. Two of her counter-revolutionary efforts included backing a coup in 479 in the name of her other son-in-law, an ambitious young nobleman named Marcian, and her support of the rebellion of Leontius in 484. Verina’s coins are rare today, but the must have been issued in some quantity at the time. Her solidi, tremisses and ?2s all bear her profile portrait, and she is also portrayed on some of Leo’s smallest bronzes as a standing figure flanked by the letters bE, representing the Greek version of her name, Berina. The date of the present solidus is not certainly known. Kent, Grierson and Mays all describe it as an issue under her husband’s successor Zeno, with Kent suggesting it may have been struck in 462 or 466, two of the five occasions on which Leo I held the consulship.
