Lips Unsealed: A Memoir
Lips Unsealed: A Memoir
The women of the iconic eighties band the Go-Go’s will always be remembered as they appeared on the back of their debut record: sunny, smiling, each soaking in her own private bubble bath with chocolates and champagne. The photo is a perfect tribute to the fun, irreverent brand of pop music that the Go-Go’s created, but it also conceals the trials and secret demons that the members of the group—and, in particular, its lead singer, Belinda Carlisle—struggled with on their rise to stardom.

Leaving her unstable childhood home at the age of eighteen, Belinda battled serious weight issues, having been teased for her pudginess throughout grade school, and grappled with her confusion about being deserted by her biological father as a child. This talented but misguided teen found solace in the punk rock world that so openly welcomed misfits—even though acceptance had its price.

Not long after forming, the Go-Go’s became queens of the L.A. punk scene—they sold out venues, attracted a fiercely loyal fan base, and outpartied almost every male band they toured with—and in the process kicked down the doors to the all-boys’ club of eighties rock and roll. With a chart-topping debut album, Belinda found herself launched to international superstardom—and with that fame came more access to A-list parties, and even more alcohol
and drugs to fuel Go-Go’s mania. Inevitably, Belinda began to self-destruct.

Lips Unsealed is filled with the wild stories that Belinda Carlisle fans are dying to hear—stories about the band’s crazy days on tour with acts like the Police and Madness and the fabulous parties and people to whom the Go-Go’s had exclusive access. But more than that, this candid memoir reveals the gritty flip side to the glitz, as Belinda shares her private struggles with abusive relationships, weight, and self-esteem, and a thirty-year battle with drug and alcohol addiction.

This spellbinding and shocking look at her rise, fall, and eventual rebirth as a wife, mother, and sober artist will leave you wistfully fantasizing about the eighties decadence she epitomized, but also cringing at the dark despair hidden behind her charming smile. One of the rare adventures through rock stardom told by a woman, Lips Unsealed is ultimately a love letter to music—to the members of the Go-Go’s, who’ve maintained lifelong friendships, and to the beloved husband and son who led Belinda to sobriety—and the story of a life that, though deeply flawed, was, and is still, fully lived.

Middle Lagoon [Explore 2011-08-12 #484]
Thanks for making this photo my 14th explored pic, I appreciate this very much! Beautiful sunset at Middle Lagoon on the Dampier Peninsula, Western Australia. We started our 2-months trip through the Kimberleys in Broome and visited first the famous Dampier Peninsula (Chile Creek and Middle Lagoon). After 70 kilometers and our first experience driving on unsealed roads, we had our first flat tire and didn't find the jack...we were really glad, that Australians are very helpful people! We had several more troubles with our car (an old 4WD Toyota Landcruiser) on the next few thousand kilometers to Cairns, but became cooler from day to day... Dampier Peninsula and Cape Leveque offer the perfect getaway for the adventurous traveller. Stretching 300 kilometres north from Broome, the only access to the area is via the unsealed Cape Leveque Road. Known to local Indigenous people as "Ardi" meaning heading North, a Dampier Peninsula experience offers the opportunity to stroll on secluded beaches at Middle Lagoon and swim or snorkel in the sparkling waters. Spend the day fishing on a charter boat or hire your own dinghy at Cape Leveque. But best of all, it gives you the chance to explore and experience the unique culture, history and lifestyle of the local Indigenous peoples. Meet the locals and learn about remote community life, staying at Mudnunn, Chile Creek, Goombaragin or La Djardarr Bay. Go mud crabbing with a local guide. And remember to visit the Sacred Heart Church, with its beautiful pearl shell altar, built by the Pallotine monks and the Indigenous people of Beagle Bay in 1917. As you travel through this pristine area, you are asked to respect the land, the culture and the privacy of local people where access is restricted. A four-wheel drive vehicle is strongly recommended for driving the unsealed road through the Dampier Peninsula - allow three and a half hours to reach Cape Leveque. During the summer the road can sometimes be closed due to flooding. Check road conditions and closures by contacting Broome Visitor Centre. Unsealed Road
Unsealed Road
After leaving Kalbarri we went to see something called 'Nature's Window', a rock formation overlooking a canyon. To get there though we had to drive 25Km over an unsealed road (mostly corrigated rock and sand). This wouldn't be a problem in a 4x4, we had a 2 wheel drive hatchback - it was interesting to say the least. Think: Back to the Future when the Delorean hits 88mph.

Tupperware Unsealed: Brownie Wise, Earl Tupper, and the Home Party Pioneers
Brownie Wise, the first woman to appear on the cover of Business Week, was the driving force behind making Tupperware a household name. Fired under mysterious circumstances, she was written out of Tupperware history and died in obscurity.

A trailblazing businesswoman decades ahead of her time, Wise created the Tupperware "home party" phenomenon in the 1950s. Her drive and creativity fueled sales and profits for the once sleepy plastic containers company. Earl Tupper anointed Wise as the company figurehead and marketing guru. Long before Disney, her lavish national headquarters drew tourists from near and far to the outskirts of Orlando, Florida, where she held court with the press, politicians, and movie stars.

Wise's idea to market Tupperware exclusively through in-home sales sparked a cultural revolution in post World War II America. For the first time, minimally educated and economically invisible housewives had opportunities for careers. She became a cultlike, charismatic leader for the Tupperware faithful, so popular that "Tupperware Ladies" would vie to win the clothes right off her back. Behind the scenes, few knew Wise was stalked by her alcoholic and abusive ex-husband and feared him appearing out of nowhere to cause shame, embarrassment, or worse.

The adoration from a legion of Tupperware dealers made her sudden fall from grace even more shocking and dramatic. At the height of her national celebrity, Tupper unceremoniously released her from the company. Journalist Bob Kealing has interviewed pioneering executives who helped build the company alongside Wise, reviewed hundreds of primary source documents written by Tupper and Wise, and obtained access to a wealth of previously unknown information, including sealed court depositions regarding a series of boat accidents successfully kept out of the press by the company, and details of secret recordings made by Tupperware Home Parties management seeking to prevent their distributors from unionizing.

Wise's rise and fall, and her relationship with the eccentric Tupper, is the stuff of legend; a story told finally, and fully, in Tupperware Unsealed.
