Birth Philosophy

As a doula I am particularly interested in fostering a satisfying birth experience and a smooth transition into parenting.

My approach to childbirth is based on a deep belief in and respect for the process of labor and birth, the inherent wisdom, intuition and strength of women and the possibility of great transformation and love available to the family through childbirth.

Doula Services

Prenatal visits-I will meet with you and your partner at least once before labor.  This prenatal visit allows us to become acquainted, to explore and discuss your preferences, priorities, and concerns about labor.  We will also discuss expectations and roles in labor and determine how we might work best together.  We may decide to plan additional meetings before labor.  If not we will remain in touch by telephone in the last few weeks of your pregnancy

Professional Lending Library- You will have borrowing privileges from my library of books, videos and DVD’s.  All items must be returned by the postpartum visit.

Personalized informational support-  I will provide explanations of medical terms, finding citations for evidence-based care, and researching community resources that fit your needs.

One prenatal massage-You will receive one 50-60 minute prenatal massage in my home massage studio.

20% off Confident Birthing Childbirth Class (7 week series only).

Phone/email support - From the time you have retained my services to 38 weeks, I am available during business hours (9-5) to answer questions or help you process information or options.  We will also stay in contact-touching base 1 to 2 times a week from 37 weeks until your labor begins so that I can be aware of any chances or challenges you are having as you near your birth.

24 hour phone support from 37 weeks to 1 week postpartum (for questions regarding your labor or immediate postpartum experience).

Attendance at special circumstances appointments with care providers as needed and agreed upon mutually.

On-call from 37 weeks until birth to provide labor support at your birth.

Continuous labor support (in the home, birth center or hospital as determined once labor has started).

Immediate postpartum and breastfeeding support- I will stay with you between 1 and 2 hours after the birth of your baby to help facilitate breastfeeding.  I will stay with you until you are comfortable and ready for quiet time together as a family.   I am available (on call) for the first week after your birth if you have particular difficulties with breastfeeding or other concerns and cannot reach your maternity provider.

One post partum visit to review, process and celebrate your birth.  We may make arrangements for more visits if necessary.

Community resources and referrals as you may need them over the 6 weeks postpartum.  I can be reached by phone or telephone during business hours for non-emergent concerns.

CD-ROM or transfer of photos taken by Kyndal during birth-this is how I document your birth.  It is dependent on how fast your birth goes and how reasonable it is for me to continue with photos throughout the birth, but most families receive a full photo documentation and keepsake of the birth.

20 % off one 1 hour postpartum massage-when you are ready to leave your baby for an hour or so.

Specialty

I founded Birth & Bodywork in 1996 (now Boise BirthWorks) in Seattle to serve the needs of expectant and new parents through therapeutic bodywork, doula services and childbirth education. I cannot even begin to count the number of women who have received massage in those years, but as of January of 2006, over 450 families have taken the Confident Birthing Class and I have attended over 130 births. I have learned something new and exciting in every class and been moved and inspired at every birth. I will never cease to marvel at women's strength and capacity to surrender so deeply and love so fully.
