Little Wookies
Little Wookies
Strobist info: Camera set on tripod at the edge of the trampoline, 10-22 wide angle lens set to widest angle possible. Stopped down the apperture to allow for a few seconds exposure without blowing everything out. Really had this set up too early in the day for a long exposure, but an overcast sky certainly helped out a bit on that score, plus there were no hard shadows to contend with. I set the camera to countdown shutter release, 10 seconds by default. I set the flash to 1/4 and zoomed to it's widest setting. Then I stood to one side of the camera and manually triggered the flash. Summary: After a couple of OK, but a little bit uninteresting shots (the trampoline bed was dull and black), I chucked the play balls on there with the hope that they would introduce some colour and movement as the little Wookies jumped around. The problem was the little Wookies were not the best at following instructions (from an increasingly frustrated daddy Wookie!) when they are having fun on the trampoline. Consequently some of the more interesting shots only had one of the components I desired: - lots of motion of the play balls but the flash only caught the Wookies standing still . - kids frozen in action but no motion trails and the play balls were curiously static. - great motion trails from the kids but everything else just pants. I found this one to be the best comprimise; 'action' pose from each of the kids, some motion trails for the kids and the play balls had some motion too. Overall it was not late enough in the day for the right level of ambient light but too late in the day for the junior Wookies to take intructions. Looks like I will have to revisit this either later in the year, as the evenings draw in, or get some older subjects later in the day (inherently problematic as this usually involves alcohol and reduces them to kids again!).

Ok, so this shot was the reason for the entire series "i am a superhero and my fridge is empty." For some reason I thought it would be a great idea to have someone ninja style chopping onions in mid-air. The execution was a little harder than I imagined, but totally worth it, and gave me and my roommate (who makes an excellent model and superhero) a good reason to throw food in the air and a lot of onions to clean up later. Interesting facts: 1) The knife is actually stuck into the onion so that when Priscilla jumps it won't fall off and so that she doesn't have to precision chop an onion in mid-air. 2) We named the whole onion on the right Hubert. 3) Hubert broke the dial on our oven so we couldn't turn it off all night. Bad Hubert. 4) I am standing on the countertop on the left throwing onions and garlic out of my now purplish-stained shirt. 4) I am triggering the camera with my toe. My hands are occupied with the throwing, so I had my remote under my right big toe. Unfortunately my big toe get's a little antsy, so we had a lot of misfires because it was too eager to shoot. 5) This is how we did it.. Me: "1...2...(I throw the onions and garlic and Priscilla jumps) ...3 (i press down with the trigger and Hubert breaks the oven) Strobist: Shoot through umbrella on upper right (clamped onto the cabinet) with an sb-26 Reflector (actually just a big white sheet of bristol paper) on the countertop on the left My camera is on the ground mounted in a pot (literally, a pot. we were after all in the kitchen) Speedlight is triggered by radiopopper jrx and the camera is triggered by remote
