About Bird Island and the Stewards

Bird Island is the last undeveloped barrier island in Brunswick County, NC, and is one of the few remaining natural barrier islands in the mid-Atlantic region. Bird Island has a half mile expanse of pristine sandy beach with high natural dunes and 1200 acres of salt marsh and tidal creeks. The island includes about 135 acres of high ground.

The island is home to a wide variety of animals and plants. It provides an essential nesting habitat for sea turtles and water birds.

The ‘Kindred Spirit’ mailbox, located in the dunes near the western end of the island, provides a quiet retreat to appreciate the beauty of the area and share thoughts with future visitors.

The Bird Island Stewards are volunteers who provide an active and visible presence on Bird Island from June through August. Stewards have no enforcement authority, but they work with the public to gain their cooperation in obeying posted regulations and by providing information about the island. They are the ambassadors for the Kindred Spirit!

You can donate to the Bird Island Preservation Society (BIPS) through the North Carolina Coastal Federation at http://www.nccoast.org/. NCCF serves as the fiscal agent for BIPS.

Upcoming Events and News

The Stewards lead weekly educational walks to Bird Island every Wednesday, June through August, starting at 8:30 AM. Meet on the beach at the 40th St. walkover. Bring water and sun protection. The walk takes about 2 and a half hours.
