Nico Jesse was best known for his photo-book Women of Paris, published in 1954; his candid pictures of women going about their daily occupations convey the vitality of the city. Two years later the book was reprinted in a paperback edition; over the next few years it appeared in several countries, including Japan. Characteristic of Jesse's work, the pictures reflect his unconventional, almost filmic treatment: people are the focal aspect and movement is often an essential element. The use of flashlight to make the figures stand out from the background is another typically Jessean device. It is not so very surprising that he made his name with a book, for his strength lay less in the individual image than in a succession of them.
Nico Jesse had studied medicine and for many years combined his profession as a general practitioner with his passion for photography. His interest in people motivated him in both capacities. In 1956 he retired from general practice to devote himself entirely to photography. His assignments came from various companies; he took photographs for annual reports and/or company publications and for many years photographed Amsterdam's important annual literary event, the Book Ball. He also produced in rapid succession a large number of photo-books featuring European cities and countries. It is clear from these books that he was more interested in the people and atmosphere of a city than in tourist attractions.
To Jesse, photography was always a means of rendering human relationships visible. In 1962 he returned to doctoring, but continued to take photographs. At his death in 1976 he left a large photographic oeuvre which conveys a wonderful picture of the Netherlands and Europe in the fifties and sixties.

Biography

1911 Nico Adriaan Jesse is born on August 22 in Rotterdam.
1930-1937 Studies medicine in Utrecht.
1930-1931 Takes photographs for the almanac of the Utrecht Student Association.
1936 One of his photographs is published in the Studio Annual of Camera Art 1935-1936.
1937 Graduates from medical school and takes part in the exhibition 'Foto '37' at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.
1941 First one-man show in the gallery of art dealer Wagenaar in Utrecht. Gerrit Rietveld opens the exhibition.
1942 Receives an assignment from the Utrecht city council to photograph wartime life in the city.
1945 Moves to Ameide in the province of Zuid-Holland, where he takes over a doctor's practice. Jan Rietveld converts the living quarters in 1947.
1946-1947Jan Versnel is his photographic assistant.
1955 Moves to the Over Holland country estate in Loenen aan de Vecht.
1956 Sells the practice in order to concentrate fully on photography. One of his photos is shown at the exhibition The Family of Man.
1956 Second one-man show at Wagenaar's in Utrecht, again opened by Gerrit Rietveld.
1957 Dutch writer Willem Frederik Hermans works as his assistant for a few months at Over Holland.
1958 Meets the German journalist Ute Fischinger, who accompanies him to Berlin as his guide. The book Menschen in Berlin is published in Germany in 1960.
1960-1961 After a brief stay in the Netherlands, he and Ute Fischinger go to Paris, where they collaborate on the book Paris. On May 1961 they marry in Switzerland.
1961-1971 Works as a medical officer and commercial photographer for the Homburg meat-processing factory. Leaves the company in 1971 after an argument about an advertising campaign. Sells his photographic apparatus for financial reasons. His archive is stored in Cuijk.
