Professor Bing Chu

I am a Professor in the School of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton. I received my BEng (2004) and MSc (2007) in Control Systems from Tsinghua University and my PhD in Automatic Control and Systems Engineering from the University of Sheffield (2009). I subsequently held a postdoctoral research position at the University of Oxford before joining the University of Southampton as a Lecturer in 2012.

My research focuses on learning-based and optimisation-based high-performance control, with particular interests in:

• Iterative learning control (ILC) and repetitive control

• Adaptive and learning systems

• Optimisation-based and data-driven control

• Applications in robotics, healthcare, and renewable energy systems

I have published over 150 peer-reviewed papers and authored two monographs, including the recent Optimal Iterative Learning Control: A Practitioner’s Guide (Springer, 2025). I serve as Vice Chair of the IFAC Technical Committee on Adaptive and Learning Systems (TC 1.2) and hold editorial roles with IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics, the CSS Conference Editorial Board, and the International Journal of Control. I have also served as General Co-Chair of UKACC Control 2024 and Associate Editor for the IFAC World Congress.
