Here is the current list of research ideas based on what was discussed at the 2012 and 2013 TRB Annual Meeting.  The Subcommittee Leaders will continue working on prioritizing this list and drafting research statements in the next calendar year, as well as identifying topics to be considered for calls for papers and annual meeting activities.  As research statement are drafted, they will be submitted to various potential funding agencies.

As with all TRB committees and subcommittees, we are a volunteer organization.  All of the research topics listed below are important to the advancement of the national bicycle/pedestrian data program.  An indication that there has not been progress on a particular research topic is not an indication that it is not important, rather this results from there not being a champion that volunteers to lead the development of a particular research topic.

In addition to pursuing funding through a formal research process, we welcome individual efforts through agency sponsorship and/or student research projects.

If you see a topic that you would like to champion or undertake in some way, please let us know!

Remember to check back often to view the status of these research statements.  Completed projects are moved to the bottom of the list.

Bike/Ped Data Subcommittee - Updated 2-19-2014

Research Ideas List

On-Going Projects:

1.       RESEARCH IDEA #1 - Conducting Data Clearinghouse Research -

- The Business Plan for Establishing a Multi-use T3 (Travel Monitoring, Travel Behavior, and Transportation (general) National Bicycle and Pedestrian Data Clearinghouse System Framework.  This includes determining the scope of data within the data clearinghouse – what is in and what is out and comparing to motorized traffic data programs.
Submitted: APRIL 1, 2012 - NCHRP 08-36 Quick Response Planning Funding

STATUS:  On-going.  This project did not get funded in 2013.  However,  the Data Subcommittee started to develop a skeleton system architecture/working website of what the data clearinghouse might look like.  It is anticipated that several iterations will evolve from user-driven input as this project continues to be the data subcommittee's priority.   Click here to visit the data clearinghouse.  We are considering resubmitting the Research Need Statement for consideration in 2014.

6.     RESEARCH IDEA #6 – Determine Data Usage - For the types of uses.

STATUS:  On-going.  We are considering hosting a workshop at TRB in 2015 to focus on how the field is using the existing bicycle and pedestrian data to answer questions and solve problems.  Jamie Parks is investigating this.

8.       RESEARCH IDEA #8 – Determine Standards for Clearinghouse – Evaluate  existing standards and how to integrate them into the bike/ped data clearinghouse

STATUS:   On-going.     FHWA has developed national standards for the collection of bicycle and pedestrian volume data (The National Data Clearinghouse T1 - travel monitoring category.) This format is available as part of FHWA's 2013 Traffic Monitoring Guide and can be found in the end of Chapter 7 .   To download the standard click here.

9.       RESEARCH IDEA #9 – Determine and document data gaps in the bike/ped industry

STATUS:   On-going.  The subcommittee has submitted (February 2014) a research topic on "Bicyclist and Pedestrian Behavior Data Sources, Needs & Gaps" for possible funding as a NCHRP synthesis project.

10.     RESEARCH IDEA #10 – Determine and Define Health Impacts Data Needs – this should be a cross-discipline area requested to partner with Health subcommittee - Working towards submitting a joint Subcommittee workshop on "unified survey techniques" for the 2013 TRB Annual Meeting. (THIS WAS POSTPONED)

STATUS:  On going.  Work has been done on this activity by organizing a webinar meeting in 2013.  Jeff Frkonja is the organizer of this activity

14.   RESEARCH IDEA #14 – Develop Document Bike/Ped Performance Measures

STATUS:  On-going.  There will be a bicycle and pedestrian performance measures workshop at NATMEC in June 2014.
_____________________________________________________

15.  RESEARCH IDEA #15 - Develop a guidebook for how to use data and electronic tools for determining outcomes in health and transportation.  This includes developing impact measures and performance matrices.

STATUS:  On-going. The TRB Health and Transportation Subcommittee is working on this.

18.  RESEARCH IDEA #18 - Develop a white paper on successes in processing and coordination of data sharing among bicycle and pedestrian data programs.

STATUS:  On-going.  The subcommittee has hosted two workshops have been held at TRB on this topic.  One in 2013 and one in 2014.  The National Institute of Transportation and Communities at Portland State University is funding a project which will include a review of successful bicycle and pedestrian data sharing programs.  The work should be done in 2014.

Not Started Yet:

5.     RESEARCH IDEA #5 – Define METADATA - what the data is, level of accuracy, and how to use the data

STATUS:  Not started yet.

_____________________________________________________

11.     RESEARCH IDEA #11 – Determine Health Survey Methods and Standards – need to recommend method for standardizing health surveys that can help the transportation field

STATUS:  Not started yet.

12.     RESEARCH IDEA #12 – Define Data Clearinghouse Target Audience - Need to track and inventory who will use and who is using the Data Clearinghouse once is is built, up and running

STATUS:  Not started yet.

16.  RESEARCH IDEA #16 - Develop a Travel Time Reliability project specific to bicycle and pedestrian travel.  Look at SHRP LO8 projects and funding.

STATUS:  Not started yet.
