Post Script 2005

I rented a car and found a bike shop to mail my bike and trailer home, so I thought. Rode my bike around the city of Homestead. I had worn out my end bars on my handle bars, took the paint right off. I found a establishment in the yellow pages of the phone book, "Cycle Wizard", sounds good. I give it a call, The guy says yes he would mail the bike/trailer. Cost, about $200 CASH. Okay says I. Meantime I make a motel reservation down in Key West, I 'll drive down. Gotta go there, I am soooo close. I buy myself another Cuban Classic, I guess I am hooked on them. On Wednesday the 6th of July I leave the motel and drive over to the Everglades National Park Information Center and visit. I buy a cap and pin. I get 3 large mosquito bites on my ankle, ouch and itchy. I return to Florida City and drop off my bike at the Cycle Wizards place. Well the Wizard, Dave, is in the new & used bicycle parts and repair business. The window signs says "Thrift Shop". Not exactly the bike shop I had envisioned, but it works out well. Dave takes the cash, calls me on Thursday and says that he has mailed the bike/trailer (it arrives within a week). Well, I head off to Key West in the rental car (Enterprise Rental Car) and drive down Route 1 to Key West. Photo is from the Seven Mile bridge (I think). I stop and buy gifts at a gift shop in Key Largo (carved wooden cats for the wife). Reach my motel (Spanish Gardens; $75 a night , pretty good price: sgardmotel@aol.com), I will stay two nights. I go and get some conch fritters at a Couch take out restaurant. I find the beginning of Route 1, and the official start of the Route 1. Just as I was at the other end in Maine (I now have touched both ends of this road). I walk around going up Duval Street, lots of restaurants, shops, alcohol, and muggy weather. I eat a key lime pie, and buy candy, tea, iced mocha, Arizona Tea, water, more ice tea, and cookie. Buy more stuff: Pina Colada, T-shirt, Shirts, post cards, Aloe Soap, Dipped Key Lime Pie on a stick and some beer! Done. I locate the most Southern Point in the USA. Thursday, stopped by the Hemingway House, line too long to wait, I pass. I go on to President Trueman's Home (buy cup/pin). Walk over to Mallory Square, nice views. Go to the Ship Wreck Museum (worth going to) tells of the history of Key West. Head over to the best rib place in Key West (Meteor Restaurant), order the Baby Back Ribs-Full Rack! I look up at the TV and the weather channel is on. "Hurricane Dennis" is headed for the keys, MANDATORY EVACUATION for all non-residents is in affect, that's ME. After lunch I head back north to the mainland, again. I don't want to get caught down here, my plane leaves on Saturday. I arrive back in Florida City, stay in motel for two days. Watch the outer bands of the hurricane hit the city. I catch my plane in Miami and return home. Phew....
