Village of Big Lake FAQ’s

How does a Village differ from a City?

In Missouri, villages are municipalities which incorporate a population under 500. If the population is larger than 500, it may incorporate as a city (see List of cities in Missouri - if interested we can add a link here to the state’s list of cities). If the population increases beyond 500 after incorporation, a vote may be held to change to a city government, but it is not automatic. Villages are governed by a board of trustees.

What is the difference between the BLIA and the Big Lake Village Board?

The Village of Big Lake Board is the board of trustees that governs the Village of Big Lake. Services the trustees oversee: Water Service, Building Standards, Permit Issuance, etc.

The BLIA is a non-profit association made up of residents and supporters of Big Lake. It is NOT a government entity and does not provide municipal services.

*Indicates new members in 2021. Each member serves two year terms. Elections are staggered with three trustee seats being held one year and the remaining two seats the following year.

When is the Board of Trustees election?

Elections are held every April. You must be a full time resident of Big Lake and a registered voter in Holt County, Missouri in order to vote in this election.

When does the Village Board of Trustees meet and are the meetings open to the public?

Board meetings are held the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 5:00pm. Meetings are open to the public. The Village Board meetings are held at the BLIA building. 407 Lakeshore Drive
