Cookie Tigress

10/10/94 to 3/12/12
Rescued 12/2008

Cookie, the tigress, was rescued from a backyard cage in Mississippi in December of 2008.  She came from David Mallory’s failed sanctuary called Cougar Haven in Gore Springs, MS.  At its peak, Cougar Haven was home to 38 big cats.  There was never much local support for the sanctuary since it was nothing more than an eccentric’s private collection.  Mallory eventually abandoned the cats, leaving their care to a volunteer who couldn’t stand by and watch the cats starve to death.  Many had already died before Cookie, Alex, and Freckles were finally rescued and brought to Big Cat Rescue.  The full story of her rescue can be read at: http://bigcatrescue.org/2011/cookie

Once at Big Cat Rescue, Cookie enjoyed life to the fullest.  She was one of the favorites of all the keepers and guests.  She could always be counted on for a friendly greeting, whether it be a chuff, an affectionate rub against the cage, or just following the keepers as they walked around outside her cage doing their daily chores for her.

Sadly, she was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in her mouth.  We said a tearful goodbye to her on March 12, 2012. Her beauty, her playfulness, her sweet disposition will be missed by so many.  The few years we had with her were so incredibly special.
