My room in McLeod Ganj, Victoria House
My room in McLeod Ganj, Victoria House
I know that since I have started this trip I have not been sharing much of the travelling experiences else than the random status updates on Facebook and I know that, being caught in this whirl of continuous unexpected happenings, I am forgetting most of the incredible things that are occurring to me and that I am seeing everyday. For once however I feel the urge to share something about the guesthouse I am staying at in McLeod Ganj and I'll write in English so that also those few non Italian speaker friends out there who have some kind of interest for my adventures can understand and hopefully enjoy the fact that they are NOT out here traveling. So, I'm staying in McLeod Ganj for quite a few weeks and I decided to rent a long term "apartment" which is nothing else then a room in a guesthouse, but when you rent it for long term it's not a room anymore, it becomes an apartment. By now I kind of know all the shop keepers and long staying foreigners here in McLeod Ganj and when they ask me where I stay then I have some troubles, cos you see my guesthouse name is Victoria House but it says nowhere. It is a yellowish building at the bottom of some very dirty steps, which when you have to go up are really really steep. There is a stained A4 paper stick on the wall, it says "rooms available". This is Victoria House, my guesthouse. The stairs are quite horrible, all kind of things can be found there. Lots of wild animals in McLeod, not just the stray dogs (which are really sweet by the way) and the sacred to Hindus cows, there are also plenty of wild monkeys around and groups of goats. At first this seemed to me some kind of a cute zoo without cages but I was soon to realize that with all those animals around lots of poo would have to be found too: dog poo, cow poo, monkey poo, goat poo, the latter being the less annoying with it's little rounded shape. Not only poo gives personality to the steps leading to Victoria House but also all kind of rubbish. Himachal Pradesh, the Indian state I'm living in now, has banned plastic bags thus giving me lots of problems on how to pack my shoes in my backpack, however the government green policy has not gone as far as developing a way to dispose of garbage. On the steps there is a whole world of rubbish, the most interesting piece (which I'd put in a sealed plastic bag if I was to be Jonathan Safran Foer) is a piece of a pig jaws with a full set of teeth. It gives me the creeps everytime I see it, ie everyday. So you see I live in a nice neighborhood. Thing is when I was looking around for "apartments" I just fell in love with one of the rooms at the Victoria House. So much that I moved in the room next door to wait for this to become available. It's a large very bright room, 2 of the walls are full length windows with a total view over the mountains and I can even see Zilnon Monastery roof coming out the woods (where i go everyday for teachings), plus I have a big balcony with pots of plants. I just had to get this room even though Victoria House does not seem to be the coziest guesthouse in the best neighborhood. It's actually a pretty rough neighborhood, quite a few times I heard fights in the middle of the night between some drunk tibetans and some annoying foreigners looking for troubles. The people running Victoria House are weird and so are the other guests staying here. First of all the 2 boys who work here do not speak a word of English, just by looking at them I gave up the idea they would have my room cleaned, so I decided to DIY and just asked for some cleansing, after some miming of what I needed and what it was needed for they got out a shaving foam for me. Ok, right. Try again. Second attempt just got me as far as them handing me a lavender air freshener. Third attempt got them to confess they did not have any sort of cleansing stuff in the guesthouse. Great. Nice place. After shopping for pure bleach and do some serious cleaning I start settling in my airy (I soon discovered one of the glass of the window is missing) and luminous room and then it's when I start to get to know my neighbours. There is a girl staying in the room next to mine now, she is Japanese, or Korean. She looks really cool, with her nice hairstyle and vintage clothes but I am not really sure what she is here for. Unless she has the exactly same schedule as me I'd say she hardly leaves her room. Strange thing is that the boys who don't speak english in the guesthouse are always knocking at her door, rather late at night or early in the morning, what they say to each other I really could not understand. There is also a tiny room on the corridor which I thought was empty, but now one of the 2 boys who work here has decided to move there since no tourist is taking it and I tell you he loves, like most Indians do, to listen to loud music through his mobile speakers and he does that when he gets up for duty at 6AM and when he is off duty at 10PM. Was this not
Vanishing Cornwall
Vanishing Cornwall
A photograph of the Atlantic coast of St Martin's, Isles of Scilly, taken on a beach cleaning trip with a teacher friend of mine and a group of Year 11 students doing their Duke of Edinburgh awards. We went to several beaches cleaning up litter, but this (believe it or not) was by far the worst, and I went home afterwards and wrote the rather angry protest song you see below. It is easy to take tourist-brochure pictures like this on the Isles of Scilly and in Cornwall (just turn your back on the piles of plastic bottles, hypodermic syringes and polystyrene packages and aim your camera towards the sea), and it is certainly true that the natural beauty and historical heritage of these places is beyond comparison. Unfortunately, a certain landlord, rather well known in this country as an heir to the throne, owns most of the land, and there are people who were born on the Isles of Scilly who still can't get proper accommodation. Meanwhile, any rich easterner can swagger into the Isles, tender some enormous sum for a rental property, and open a B&B or set up a holiday home. We were not-very-rich easterners, and the tone for our stay was set on the day we walked into our flat, with its broken window and lino tiles coming up of the floor, and the hot tap connecting to the washing machine which came off in my hand, filling the kitchen with scalding water. The tendering system is supposed to be fair and the 'needs of the islands' are supposed to be taken into account, but the simple truth is, they are not. We had two and a half years of this breathtaking beauty, and the wonderful ocean gales, and the hypocrisy and corruption - and that was enough. How can a place be so beautiful, and the powers-that-be so rife with corruption and incompetence? See - I can say it now - I don't live there any more. I feel better already! UNDER THE SKIN (for Daphne du Maurier) Cornwall is vanishing under the tar Fair trade is ended, you’re ruled by the car, The tin mines are ruins, the digging has ceased, We’re all of us slaves to the wealth of the east. Seek out your history, seek out your kin: Tristan or tinner, it’s under your skin. Cornwall is vanishing, caravan parks Clutter the clifftops, lights drown the dark, Wells full of litter, a new urban poor, And all of the mess washes up on the shore. Seek out your history, seek out your kin: Tristan or tinner, it’s under your skin. Cornwall is vanishing, the bridge is too wide That crosses the Tamar; it lets in the tide, And now we are drowning in wealth from without. So climb Castle Dinas, and stand there and shout: “I seek out my history, seek out my kin: Tristan or tinner, it’s under my skin.” Seek out your history, seek out your kin: Tristan or tinner, it’s under your skin. Cornwall is vanishing, come take a stand: From Launceston to Scilly, it’s all sacred land, From Stannon to Boscawen, granite to clay, The high moors of Bodmin, the rocks of Hell Bay, Seek out your history, seek out your kin: Tristan or tinner, it’s under your skin. Seek out your history, seek out your kin: Tristan or tinner, it’s under your skin. Cornwall is vanishing, you can’t afford The land that is leased by a rich eastern lord. The wind is your wealth, and your soil and sea: These are the things that will yet make you free. Seek out your history, seek out your kin: Tristan or tinner… Song lyric by Giles Watson, 2006.
