Courtney Carpenter Race Category: huh? um..newbie? Residenze: San Diego, CA Petite Resume: I don’t have much of a resume yet. I decided to do Triathlon in 2003, when I moved back to SD. I bought a road bike (a carbon framed bike that was far more advanced than my current ability level) to ensure that I would have to actually ride. I hadn’t been on a bike since 1997! First Triathlon- Spring Sprint 2005. Then a lot of “base training”. This year I have really gotten into racing more: Spring Sprint, Donner Lake Olympic Triathlon**, LA Triathlon- relay, and will be doing Jamba Juice Mission Bay Sprint. Goals: I think I want to do a ? Ironman next year, Compete in a road bike race, and get my Sprint Triathlon time down. Oh—and run a half marathon without getting injured before, during or after the race. Velo(s) I Ride: Lemond- Zurich How I support by Bike Habit: Special Projects/IT Support at a Law Firm Downtown—for now Best Time on the Bike: During a sprint race, maybe my 2nd or so. I found out how to ride fast, and keep the pace. good times! Also the climb up Donner Summit. It was a long climb, and I was snail slow, but it was the BEST for personal reasons. It was one of my Goals to do that race. Worst Time on the Bike: Um…that might be the first ride Raja took me on. I am a swimmer, and water polo player. I didn’t have legs for running/biking…no quads at all. It was a small hill and I saw it and was like “you want me to what?? I can’t go up that thing!”… followed by a lot of whining, a lot of ‘no, no, no…I can’t, I can’t’…then a VERY slow and shaky ascent. Love ya Raja—the reason I bike now, and the reason I made it up the dang thing in the first place. My Motto: Never stop caring. And when I ride I think to myself “50 more miles to beer…20 more miles to beer…1 more mile to beer!” hahaha…it’s like a variation to that 99 bottles of beer on the wall! Favorite Post-Ride Food: I like to eat the World. Actually, I don’t know what my favorite thing is yet…I guess I need to figure that out. Favorite Web Site: velobella of course! Grab Bag: When I finished college I was really into running and rock climbing. The thought of a triathlon was pretty intriguing, though I was a little shy to get started (since I knew nothing at all about biking, and hadn’t ridden in about 5yrs.) I met a group of people who got me into tri’s. I was set up to do the swim portion of a relay. That month I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, and was unable to race. I went through the fight, and survived. When I was recovering I gave myself a couple goals: to run a ? marathon, and to do a triathlon, namely the one I was going to compete in before getting sick (Donner Lake). So I bought my bike and started training. It’s been a really great 3 yrs in remission, and I’m finally starting to feel strong and able to do more intense racing (if I could get myself to train consistently!!). See you on the course!!

Tonight my best friend MaryT! and her younger brother JesseCT will be flying into the Harrisburg airport, arriving from Arizona at 11:24 pm. They are here for the weekend for a team triathlon that will be held at Pinchot on Sunday morning. We are the Raging Bunnies. Rhoda is taking on the swimming leg, Mary is running, and I will be biking. And Jesse will be holding a sign and cheering us on. Rhoda and I have been anticipating Mary and Jesse's visit for quite some time. We decided to reserve a site at Pinchot and to make the weekend into a camping extravaganza. The plan is to pick the two up at the airport and drive immediately to a karaoke bar in High Spire, singing as many songs as possible before the joint closes at 1:00 a.m. (Correction: Jesse and I will be singing; Mary and Rhoda will be humoring us and working the crowd.) After performances, we'll head over to Pinchot to our campsite and settle down in our tent. William is a recent graduate who has been staying with Rhoda and I for the last few days in our guest room. I had neglected to tell him that we were going camping. This morning, he pointed at the list lying on the kitchen table as we were sitting and drinking our coffee. "I saw the word 'tent,' and assumed you were preparing for a camping trip," he said in a confused voice, "but then noted the items 'clubbing clothes' and 'make up' and wasn't quite sure... What exactly are you doing this weekend?" I assured William that we were indeed going camping. Camping Deborah-Rhoda style, that is.
