THE WONDER OF GOD WITHIN US

Prelude Ayre (Georg Philip Telemann); Adagio (Antonio Vivaldi)

Welcome Lucila Alvarez Molina

Invocation Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer

Memory Verse John 16:7 (ESV)
Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away,
for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you.
But if I go, I will send him to you.

And Can It Be?” Hymnal 347

When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” Hymnal 324

Scripture Reading Psalm 51:1–12 (ESV) Angie Lui

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love;
according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!

For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.

Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight,
so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.

Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.
Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being,
and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.

Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice.
Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.

Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart” Hymnal 390

Lord, I Give You My Heart”

Have Thine Own Way, Lord” Hymnal 591

Statement of Faith
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord:
Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried…
The third day He arose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty,
whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, God’s holy church, the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
(This statement of faith is adapted from The Apostles’ Creed)

Alas! and Did My Savior Bleed?” Hymnal 306

WHEN THE SPIRIT HAS HIS WAY
Recapturing the Wonder of God Within Us

The Gift of Conviction
John 16:5–15
Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer

Not a one of us would be saved (meaning, to receive Christ as Savior) were it not for the direct intervention of God the Holy Spirit. Jesus shares what the Holy Spirit will do when unleashed through believers:

1. He will convict of one sin: unbelief

2. He will convict of one standard: righteousness

3. He will convict of one danger: judgment

4. He will use one channel: believers

The bottom line:

The Work of the Holy Spirit

5 But now (H)I am going to him who sent me, and (I)none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, (J)sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for (K)if I do not go away, (L)the Helper will not come to you. But (M)if (N)I go, (O)I will send him to you. 8 (P)And when he comes, he will (Q)convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, (R)because they do not believe in me; 10 (S)concerning righteousness, (T)because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 (U)concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world (V)is judged.

12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When (W)the Spirit of truth comes, (X)he will (Y)guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but (Z)whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will (AA)glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 (AB)All that the Father has is mine; (AC)therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

A TRIBUTE

Today is the last Sunday that Pastor Hutz Hertzberg, his wife Lynne and daughter Hiley will be with us as a part of the Moody Church family. As you know, Pastor Hertzberg has accepted an invitation to become the Executive Director of the Orchard Network, a new organization being formed to train future Christian leaders for ministry vocations such as church planting, pastoring, missionary work, etc. He has before him the wonderful challenge of recruiting, training, and directing this exciting new venture.

But, as all of us know, the Orchard’s gain is our loss. We will miss the Hertzbergs’ friendship and encouragement in all the areas of our ministry. As our Executive Pastor, Hutz has given direction to the pastoral staff, has been a resource for ideas, and he and Lynne have made themselves available to the entire congregation. He has been a champion of everything from our many Connection Ministries to wearing name tags (if you are wearing one today, you have him to thank!).

The good news is that the Hertzbergs are not moving far from us; the offices of the Network will be in the area. And we have made it clear that the family is always welcome here; leaving the staff does not need to translate into leaving the church, though his new position will tie them closely to The Orchard, led by Pastor Colin Smith.

So today we say goodbye to the Hertzbergs, but with the understanding that when they are lonely for our fellowship, they will return to visit, to encourage and to inspire. And yes, to see if we are still wearing our nametags!

All for the King
Pastor Lutzer
