yā puna bhikṣuṇī ūna-viṁśati-varṣāṁ kumārī-bhūtāṁ upasthāpayet pācattikaṁ If a bhikkhuni ordains a maiden less than 20 years old, [this entails a] pacittiya.
ūna-viṁśati-varṣā kumārī-bhūtā A maiden less than 20 years old
Bhagavān Śrāvastīyam viharati | bhikṣuṇīyo dāni daśadvādaśa-varṣāṁ kumārī-bhūtām upasampādayanti |a-pratisaṁkhyānavartinyo bhavanti an-ākalpa-sampannā | na jānanti katham upādhyāyīye pratipadyitavyaṁ yāvat saṁghāṭī-pātra-cīvara-dhāraṇe pratipadyitavyaṁ The Blessed One was staying at Srāvasti. Some nuns gave the ordination to some maidens of 10 and 12 years age. These were conducting themselves thoughtlessly, they were poorly behaved, did not know how to behave in relation to a preceptor (female), how to wear/carry the saṁghāti, the bowl and the robes.
etaṁ prakaraṇaṁ bhikṣuṇīyo Mahāprajāpatīye Gautamīye ārocayeṁsuḥ | yāvad Bhagavān āha | śabdāpayatha tā bhikṣuṇīyo| tā dāni śabdāpitāḥ | tad eva sarvaṁ Bhagavān vistareṇa pṛcchati yāvad āma Bhagavan Some nuns related this to Mahāprajāpatī Gautamī etc. The Blessed One interrogated in detail about all of this etc… “Yes, Blessed One.”
Bhagavān āha | tena hi na kṣamati ūna-viṁati-varṣāṁ kumārībhūtām upasthāpayituṁ | atha khalu Bhagavān yāvat paryavadātāni bhaviṣyanti | The Blessed One said: “From now it is not good to ordain a maiden younger than 20 years.”Then The Blessed One etc…“let this be perfectly understood,
yā puna bhikṣuṇī ūna-viṁśati-varṣāṁ kumārībhūtāṁ upasthāpayet pācattikaṁ if a bhikkhuni ordains a maiden less than 20 years old, [this entails a] pacittiya.
ūna-viṁśati-[varṣā ti] ūna-viṁśodaka-varṣo ūna-viṁśo samvatsaro ūna-viṁśati-varśā | ūna-viṁśodaka-varṣo pūra-viṁśo samvatsara ūna-viṁṣati-varṣā | ūna-viṁśodaka-varṣo atireka-viṁśo samvatsaro ūna-viṁśati-varṣā | less than 20 [years] signifies/means if [since birth] there are less than 20 monastic years, and less than 20 civilian years, she has less than 20 years; if there are less than 20 monastic years, and 20 civilian years, she has less than 20 years; if there are less than 20 monastic years, and more than 20 civilian years, she has less than 20 years.
hemant jātā tena viṁśena upasaṁpādeti akṛtāyāṁ pravāraṇāyāṁ ūna-viṁśati-varṣā | evaṁ grīṣme jātā | If she is born in the cold season and receives the ordination in the 20th following year, before that Pravārana takes place, she has less than 20 years; and the same if she was born in the hot season.
evaṁ purimikāyāṁ varṣopanākāyāṁ jātā tena viṁśe[na] upasaṁpādeti ūna-viṁśati-varṣā | In the same way, if she was born on the first day of the rains retreat (prior), and receives in the 20th year that follows, [before the 20th Pravārana takes place], she has less than 20 years.
paścimikāyāṁ varṣopanāyikāyāṁ jātā tena viṁśena upasampādeti | akṛtāhi dvihi pravāraṇāhi | ūna-viṁśati-varṣā | If she is born on the first day of the rains retreat following and receives the ordination in the 20th following year, before the two Pravāranas have taken place, she has less than 20 years
kumārībhūtām etām ūna-viṁśati-varṣāṁ sarvā ūna-viṁśati-varṣa-samjñinīyo upasampādenti sarvāyo pācattikam āsādayanti | sā ca an-upasampannā | If all [the nuns of the order] consider that she is less than 20 years old, give the ordination to this maiden less than 20 years old, they all commit an offence entailing formal confession, and the candidate is not legally ordained.
tām etām ūna-viṁśati-varṣāṁ kumārībhūtāṁ eka ūna-viṁśati-varṣa-samjñinīyo upasampādenti ekā pūra-samjñinīyo | yā ūna-saṁjñinīyo upasampādenti tāyo pācattikam āsādayanti If certain, who consider that she is less than [20 years old], and others who consider her to be 20 years old, give the ordination to this maiden of less than 20 years, those who have given the ordination with the knowledge that she is less [than 20] commit an offence entailing a formal confession;
pūra-saṁjñinām an-āpattiḥ | sā cān-upasampannā | for those who think that she is 20 years there is no fault; and the candidate is not legally ordained.
ūna-viṁśati-varṣāṁ sarvāyo ūna-viṁśati-varṣa-samjñinīyo upasampādenti sarvāsām an-āpattiḥ | sā ca sūpasampannā | If all [the nuns gathered there] consider her to be 20 years old, and give the ordination to a maiden of less than 20 years, none of them are at fault, and the candidate is legally ordained.
pūra-viṁśati-varṣāṁ sarvāyo ūna-viṁśati-varṣa-saṁjñinīyo upasampādenti sarvā vinayātikramam āsādayanti | sā ca sūpasampannā | If all, considering her to be less than 20 years old, give the ordination to a candidate of 20 years, they commit an infraction of the vinaya; and the canditate is legally ordained.
pūra-viṁśati-varṣām ekā ūna-viṁśati-varṣa-saṁjñinīyo ekā pūra-viṁṣati-varṣa-saṁjṇinīyo upasampādenti | yā ūna-viṁśati-varśa-saṁjñijīyo tā vinayātikramam āsādayanti | If some, who consider her to be less than 20, and others who consider her to have 20 years [completed] give the ordination to a maiden of less than 20 years [completed], those who gave the ordination and considered her to be less than 20 years old, have committed an infraction of the vinaya,
yā puna(pūra)-viṁśati-varṣa-saṁjñinīyo tāsām [an]-āpattiḥ | sā ca sūpasampannā | for those who think that she is has 20 years [completed], there is no offence; and [the candidate] is legally ordained.
pūra-viṁśati-varṣāṁ sarvā pūra-saṁjñinīyo upasampādenti sar-vāsām an-āpattiḥ | sā ca sūpasampannā | If all, considering her to have 20 years [completed] give the ordination to a candidate of 20 years [completed] there is no fault, and the [candidate] is legally ordained.
kumārī-bhūtā ti kumārībhūtā a-vikopita-brahmacaryā | upasthāpayed iti upasampādayet pācattikaṁ | pe | yāvat prajñaptiḥ | “maiden” means, “maiden, virgin”.“ordain” means “give the ordination”. This is an offence entailing formal confession – etc… promulgation/set forth
yā eśā kumārībhūtā ākāṁṣati Tathāgata-pravedite dharma-vinaya upasampadaṁ sā dāni samanu-grahitavyā | kadā tvaṁ jātā | atha na jānāti janma-paddhikā niśāmayitavyā When a maiden desires to be ordained within the rules and discipline stated by the Tathagata[s], she must be asked when she was born. If she does not know, then the birth registers must be examined.
janma-paddhikā na bhavanti mātā-pitarau pṛcchitavyau | atha dāni te pi na jānanti pṛcchitavyā | katarasmiṁ rājye jātā | kettikā vā tadā tvaṁ abhūṣi | su-dṛṣṭir dur-dṛṣṭir vā | pṛcchitavyā If there is no birth register, then her mother and father should be asked. If they also don’t know, she must be asked under whose reign she was born, or how big she was, or if there was rain or drought.
na uddhikasya vā citrikasvya vā vaśena gantavyaṁ | atha khu hasta-pādā niśāmayitavyāḥ If still there is no [information] she should not be given to the uddhika or to the citrika [no translation found for these terms]. On the contrary, her hands and feet should be examined.
tena Bhagavān āha |yā puna bhikṣuṇī ūna-viṁśati-varṣāṁ kumārībhūtāṁ upasthāpayet pācattikaṁ Thus, The Blessed One said:“and if a bhikkhuni ordains a maiden less than 20 years old, [this entails a] pacittiya. ”
