MARCH IS NUTRITION MONTH

Ideas for Elementary Schools

Nutrition information has never been more accessible than right now; millions of Canadians have ready and easy access to the Internet and other forms of social media. But not all the information is credible; myths and misinformation abound. Nutrition Month 2012 is dedicated to busting up popular food and nutrition myths by bringing truths to Canadians from dietitians, the food and nutrition experts. This year’s theme is Get the real deal on your meal!

The following are ideas for Nutrition Month initiatives for Elementary Schools. Original ideas are also encouraged.

Have a Nutrition Party

§ Have a class party to celebrate Nutrition Month.

§ Ask parents to send in healthy items such as fruit kebobs, yogurt parfaits, muffins, etc.

§ Students can play nutrition games or dress up in the color of their favorite fruit or vegetable.

Student Leadership

§ Encourage students to create healthy eating pictures and posters to decorate your school.

§ Ask students to research nutrition tips and read them on the announcements each day.

§ Incorporate the pictures, posters and tips into the school webpage and/or newsletter.

Nutritious Recipe Contest

§ Host a student healthy recipe contest and feature the winning recipe in your cafeteria or breakfast program.

§ Develop a school cookbook using staff and students’ favorite healthy recipes.

§ Post student recipes on your school webpage or include in your school newsletter.
