i've been having problems with my cable modem service lately. customer service suggested that my 4-year-old modem might have been too old and that i should get a new one from a local payment center. i went to the nearest center a few minutes before it opened. it's ironic that i've worked on ADSL for the last 10 years, and i helped millions and millions of people around the world to get ADSL, but i can't get it at my own home -- probably too far from the central office. from my phone number, i know i'm connected to a central office in a different town. i couldn't get the new modem to work after i got it home. called customer service again, and i was told its MAC address needed to be registered. that makes sense because all the subscribers are connected to the same cable. right, that's different from DSL. it seems the cable modem is configured as a bridge, and it's a good thing i have a wireless router behind it, which i need anyway to network all 3 computers at home.
