  • Wireless communication is the transfer of information over a distance without the use of enhanced electrical conductors or "wires". The distances involved may be short (a few meters as in television remote control) or long (thousands or millions of kilometers for radio communications).
  • technology that allows the digital instruments to wirelessly communicate information
  • A standard for the short-range wireless interconnection of cellular phones, computers, and other electronic devices
  • A short-range radio build into smartphones that lets you connect headsets, speakerphones or even computers to your smartphone.
  • Bluetooth is an open wireless technology standard for exchanging data over short distances (using short wavelength radio transmissions) from fixed and mobile devices, creating personal area networks (PANs) with high levels of security.
  • An industrial specification for wireless personal area networks
  • In computer networks, to download means to receive data to a local system from a remote system, or to initiate such a data transfer. Examples of a remote system from which a download might be performed include a webserver, FTP server, email server, or other similar systems.
  • The act or process of copying data in such a way
  • A computer file transferred in such a way
  • transfer a file or program from a central computer to a smaller computer or to a computer at a remote location

Going Green
Going Green
Illustration by Rocky Wu / Courier As the technology hype escalates, more companies aim to be ‘green’ Vincent Lopez, Staff Writer How long does your battery last? How long does it take to charge? What are the keys on your keyboard made of? When we think about technology, we very rarely think about how “green” it is. People are quick to bring up the film ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ when discussing environmental issues – they forget to mention, however, that they left their desktop computer on all night downloading the film, at which point they burned the movie to a plastic DVD-R and watched it alone on a 53 inch HDTV in a home theater setting. Last year Apple Computer and Lenovo Group, two notable computer manufacturers, were called out by Greenpeace for toxic chemicals used during the manufacturing process. Since then Lenovo has made much progress improving their desktop and notebook computers to Greenpeace’s standards, with their latest ThinkPad notebooks wasting dramatically less energy than they used to. Apple, however, has taken a different approach to dealing with their Greenpeace ranking. The CEO Steve Jobs puts much less stock in Greenpeace’s metrics, claiming on the company website that “…Apple is ahead of, or will soon be ahead of, most of its competitors in these areas.” Corporate imaging aside, how can you make a difference at home? Well, it’s actually surprisingly easy – and as always, also beneficial to you. An effective and aesthetically pleasing method is to change from that old, clunky CRT monitor to a newer Energy Star certified LCD panel. They’re physically smaller, meaning they take less material to make and also use much less energy than older CRTs. Did you also know that CRTs use an average of 3 pounds of lead in them? Portable electronics and laptop users would also do good for themselves and their battery life by using power management features. Turn off Bluetooth and wireless Internet features when not in use as their radios can dramatically reduce system battery life. Many modern notebooks also come with features that trade off CPU power for energy savings, extending your battery life with a very minor performance hit. When you go out and buy your shiny new iPhone don’t forget about your old beat up Motorola. Circuitry components can have toxic chemicals that can be better disposed of by electronics recyclers than your local garbage man. Remember, being green isn’t just about plants anymore – try to be energy efficient.
