Hansa was a real elephant born at the Woodland Zoo, in Seattle, Washington. She was an instant celebrity and a bundle of joy. Everyone fell in love with Chai's new baby, and Hansa romped, played and seemed like a happy elephant who enjoyed her life. Unfortunately, this year (2007), at six years old, Hansa suddenly passed away. Her death hit me quite hard. Elephants are my favorite animals. More, Hansa's birth brought me back to the zoo. . . and helped me to see that modern zoos had made great progress and now show much more respect for the animals and their need for a pleasant and more organic habitat. To meditate on Hansa's beauty--and all the joy she brought to me as I watched her play and get her morning baths--I decided to crochet this plush and to send it to the Woodland Zoo elephant keepers.
