wood warbler
wood warbler
Tuesday June 9th 2009 The Wood Warbler is one of the last migrants to arrive in the woods around Bassenthwaite. It is a close relative and look-alike to the Chiff-chaff and the Willow Warbler, which have been around since early April. All are small warblers, olivaceous in colour and given to invisibly flitting around in the tops of trees. It is the males’ hugely different songs that distinguish them one from another. Chiff chaffs say their own name repeatedly, Willow Warblers’ notes slide in a wavering descending scale but the Wood Warbler has a call as strident as an old-fashioned wind up alarm clock, complete with the stutter at the beginning of the trill. As the sound builds up in the tiny bird’s syrinx its whole body seems taken over by the vibrating force. Its chest expands, it stretches its neck up, half closes its eyes and as the alarm revs up in speed and volume – falls backwards off its branch. At least that’s what happened to one of them seen performing a while back. The only sound to be heard for some minutes after that was muffled giggles. Well, no-one says bird-watching has to be a serious past-time. Get a grip that bird!
