Hyderabad - Golconda Fort 25
Hyderabad - Golconda Fort 25
I spent most of a hot morning clambering around a local medieval fortress 15km out of Hyderabad at Golconda. I could have spent whole days exploring it. Hopefully some of the pictures will give you an idea of the experience. Founded originally by the Kakatiyas in the 13th century, the existing structure was expanded by the Qutb Shahi kings into a massive fort of granite with walls and ramparts extending some 7kms in circumference. The remains of armouries, baths, jails, granaries, temples, throne rooms and even harems are all there to be seen. The fortress city within the walls was famous for the diamond trade and the Koh-i-noor diamond is said to have come from here. I found it all a strange Hyderabadi mixture of a ruined Edinburgh Castle/York Minster Cathedral/Minas Tirith.
