The Stenstorp kitchen island from IKEA is built and in our kitchen. I like it a lot. It is slightly wider than would be ideal, but it gives us storage and a place to sit and eat or work. It is moveable, which is good. And it seems very strong and sturdy. Here the plastic is still on the shelves. The shelves are stainless steel. Stainless steel is not really what I want -- I kind of like the light color the shelves have at the moment with their shipping plastic on, but of course we'll have to remove that. I wonder if painting the stainless steel would be a problem...
