Written on the pages are the recipes for different colors of dye.

Blue dye: blackberries. Put the berries in a cooking pot and put the pot over the
fire. Simmer until thick. Pour dye into a cask and stopper well.

Yellow dye: willow bark. Put the bark in a cooking pot and put the pot over the
fire. Simmer until thick. Pour dye into a cask and stopper well.

Red dye: gheandin blossom. Put the blossom in a cooking pot and put the pot over the
fire. Simmer until thick. Pour dye into a cask and stopper well.

You put a handful of blackberries in a cast iron cooking pot.

The liquid becomes more thick.
Bubbles of color pop and splatter as the liquid thickens.
You remove a pot from the fire and let the liquid cool.
As the liquid cools down, it thickens.
You pour a dye in a cask.
