National Anthem ???
National Anthem ???
All four verses of South Korea's national anthem, Aegukga, as seen on a marker at Marronnier Park northeast of downtown Seoul. Like most other national anthems, only one verse (first verse in this case) will be officially sung in almost all cases, though in case of South Korea, all four verses are official parts of the anthem. At least every South Korean knows there are four verses to Aegukga (and usually knows all four by heart), unlike back in the US, where most people do not even know that the Star-Spangled Banner actually has four verses as well. The lyrics are an old poem, of unknown origin, that were set to the melody of Auld Lang Syne, which had been introduced to Korea by American Christian missionaries. The Auld Lang Syne-based song was used as the anthem of Korea's pro-independence fighters, but the fact that an Irish melody was being used was not exactly convenient for those nationalist-minded folks. In the 1930s, composer Ahn Eak-tae wrote a symphony called Fantasia Korea, and its final musical phrase was used as this song's new melody; the new anthem became South Korea's official national anthem upon the nation's 1948 founding. Although North Korea also refers to its national anthem as Aegukga, that anthem is completely different; it ended up writing a new one from scratch, primarily because the term Daehan (??/??) referring to the Korean people and nation, used by nationalistic independence fighters and South Korea, fell out of favor north of the DMZ. The North's terminology for Korea itself is Choson (??/??), used previously by two different Korean states and the source of the nickname "Land of the Morning Calm."
