How Film Cartoons are Made (part 2)
How Film Cartoons are Made (part 2)
...built, but when the Flood comes Sam is left to swim. He is striking out vigorously (for Blackpool!) when the Ark sails by, and Noah, protected by an umbrella, again makes his offer. But, game to the last, Sam glowers up at him from the water and still holds out for his price of 1 1/2d. a foot. This is the main argument of a film that contains many amusing situations. One of the most spectacular is when the Ark reaches Blackpool. The waters subside with terrific speed, and the Ark lands on the top of the scenic railway, and runs all round it like a car, really jumping the rails at the bottom and breaking into pieces. It will be noted that such schemes of broad burlesque play havoc with all logic and dates, and that the more improbable they are the better films they are likely to be. But an artist hoping to take up this branch of work is by no means limited to the farcical aspect. Animation by separate drawings maybe applied to a very large number of subjects as and when the demand arises or can be created. Anson Dyer, whose organization has given us this opportunity of exposition, has, in the course of more than twenty years' experience, been called upon to carry out a number of tasks in widely differing fields. One project was a film showing the human digestive processes, and the extreme utility of such a scheme to medical education is readily apparent. The day may come (if the human race ever becomes sane enough to spend its millions on education instead of war) when every medical school will have its library of drawn films showing various natural and pathological processes in progress. The enormous aid which could hereby be given to the lecturer in all departments of medicine should be evident. In engineering, too, a great deal could be done, and there is almost no branch of knowledge that could not be illuminated by this technique. One can readily visualize, for example, films showing the fertilization of flowers, the formation of crystals, or the movements of the heavenly bodies. The more everyday business of advertisement has already seen the potentialities of the film cartoon, and Anson Dyer has executed advertising films for Bush Radio, Cocktail Cigarettes, and other firms. It is probable, indeed, that regarded on the long view the film cartoon may even now be considered to be only in its adolescent period, and that it has a long and vigorous manhood before it. Much will depend on commercial and political conditions; but it seems reasonably sure that in course of time the technique will be increasingly used in many different realms. It is, then, a new field of opportunity for artists, but only for artists who have courage, vision, imagination and a considerable amount of business ability. This last is very necessary, for with anything new a sceptical world has to be converted; and no lukewarm conversion is good enough to support an industry. We must now take our leave of the Anglia Studios, with the hearty wish and confident hope of their increasing prosperity. In young aspirants who feel they have the kind of ability desired this series of articles will, we hope, have aroused interest and enthusiasm. In the world as it is today it can hardly be too often emphasized that artists, like workers in other fields, may see half-a-dozen doors opening for every one that closes. Anson Dyer's own career is an object-lesson in adaptability, for nothing could be further away from his present interests than his early work in stained glass. This art form looks to the future, not to the past, and as such it deserves the attention of all those whose eyes can see ahead.
Earth Paste - Self Portrait
Earth Paste - Self Portrait
Tried a one light shot with my homemade ring flash, yet i still ended up with a shadow.Go figure, if i was closer i'm sure i would have got rid of the shadow. I was shooting a self portrait so getting the focus wasn't fun. Anyways i wet my face and applied flour to my face to add texture..not a great feeling once the flour dries. Really dries out your face and feels very tight on your skin. I can probably make a selection in post and mask the " halo " or shadow around the shoulders. I'm not the best in post , so not really sure how. Any critisms or tips appreciated as i'm still learning.
