39/365 Dear Jo Rowling,
I remember the exact moment when I picked up Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. I was in school and as usual we had to do a book report. So I walked to the little library inside of the classroom and the cover just stood out so I grab it. After that there really wasn’t any turning back. I wasn’t addicted to it. It was never an addition it was more of freedom. I remember the nights that I hid under the covers with a flashlight turning pages in the dark. My mother never wanted me to read it. See I grew up in a Christian family and so at the time this came out I remember all the news stories about how parent’s should be careful and that it was teaching kids magic. Ha! I just laughed…cause I wish that were true. Then I read the next one and the next and the next. I watched myself grow up with these books. Call it a magical experience. I think what made it so relatable to me at that time was the fact that I could relate to so many character’s in different ways. With Harry: I was never really all that close to people at a young age. I called people my best friends but they really weren’t. I spent most of my childhood like him. Relaxing in the sun, hiding from adults and looking for something to do. With Hermione: Honestly if the wizarding world was actually real I would be just like her…a know it all. I would be too fascinated with it and I would just want to know everything. But at the time when I read the books I could relate to her because I would always try and learn something all the time about any random subject. I read a lot too. With Ron: Before I say anything I would just want to point out that he is my favorite character. I have a love for red heads…as a matter of fact my best friend is a red head (damn you!) more maroonish but she still is a red head…and I also have a love for the British. It’s so cool that we share the same language but we speak it differently. Then to top it off Ron is funny. He’s that guy that even if your having a bad day he will come out of the blue and say something that would just make you smile…not because he’s trying to just because that’s what he is. I can relate to Ron because he’s always turning things to positive direction and I never stop doing that as dark as thing’s can get. With Dumbledore: We both speak in riddles. You already know. With Luna: She doesn’t care if she’s weird. I feel like a lot of people are just below her because she’s so brilliant in her own way. People underestimate her. With Snape: Oh man! I hated him for a few books but he is one of my favorites. Alan Rickman just plays him to perfection. I feel like after I read his real intentions I understood that even if sometimes he didn’t want to his actions were driven by love. I can relate to that to the bone! With Sirius: He’s always looking for adventure and he was the black sheep in his family and he was proud to be. That is my life. With Hagrid: He loves animals, which is something I always loved about him. He always wants the best for things and he has this caring nature that is just endearing. With Fred & George: These too remind me of Ron but on a higher level. They really are TOO funny. They really are best friends and brothers. Reading about Fred’s death was like watching Titanic 5 times. And that’s just a few. But in reality with its character’s, the best part of the Harry Potter series to me was what it taught me. When I said I grew up with the series I don’t just mean that I read a new book ever other year. They’re lessons to be learned. To me the most important lesson that I learned was that love is magic. So I would just like to thank J.K. Rowling for teaching me that, for opening up my imagination at such a young age. For teaching me that is better to live than day dream, that even when thing’s seem so dark you can always find a way to the light again, for creating these strong vulnerable character’s and letting me read about their mistakes. Thank you for allowing me to walk the halls of Hogwarts every year. Thank you for teaching me patience. Thank you for teaching me about friendship. Thank you for teaching me about love. Thank you. Love Always, Abbey
