    perpetual motion
  • Perpetual Motion is an album of classical music released in 2001. The album is unique in that none of the pieces featured on it are played on the instruments for which they were written.
  • Perpetual motion describes hypothetical machines that operate or produce useful work indefinitely and, more generally, hypothetical machines that produce more work or energy than they consume, whether they might operate indefinitely or not.
  • A state in which movement or action is or appears to be continuous and unceasing
  • The motion of a hypothetical machine that, once activated, would run forever unless subject to an external force or to wear
  • motion that continues indefinitely without any external source of energy; impossible in practice because of friction

I gave a talk at the opening of the Star Vistas Exhibition in Bristol yesterday - and also had a look at the local area. There is an absolutely superb market just round the corner from the Photo Gallery up a flight of stone steps. In this market was the most amazing Mineral, Rocks and Fossils stall run by John Morris [worldfossils.co.uk] if you have ANY interest in this stuff then check out John's collection - it is unique and truly mind-blowing. At another stall I bought this fascinating toy - how does it work? It clearly has got nothing to do with what the instructions say - but it is rotating now on my desk in the study under very dim Sunlight (it is 5:15 p.m. and the Sun is setting fast).

"Asa Jackson's Perpetual Motion Machine, designed and built in the mid-1800s to produce power and run forever." Local legend says that Asa kept his machine hidden in a cave during the Civil War and disassembled it when it was unattended so no one could understand how it worked. It is also said that he once got it to run for several days, maybe for several weeks without any external power.
